Abstract
In today's design world the word 'Oriental' becomes what everyone is looking into. Not anymore is it identified with some mystical and humorous images. It is now more often than not affiliated with foremost natural, sometimes sublime and yet always quietly harmonious images. Not surprisingly Korean art has enjoyed its share of spot light well deserved. Despite booming resurgence of interest in the traditional Korean art form, however, it has not realized its full potential enough to secure a place in the world art market. The aim of this study is, simply put, to experiment a way of incorporating the aesthetic values inherent in the traditional Korean pottery into modem fiber art pieces. To design pieces which stand out among the contemporaries we first search for the traditional motif in the various combᅳ patterns of the ancient Korean pottery. Then comes the question of what to make with. Of the pieces utilizing the traditional motif are mats, runners, scarves, cushions, and purses. They are mainly made of linen, hand-spun silk and the likes to give the highly sophisticated texture. There might be many different ways of renewing the history. Reviving the traditional pattern in modem artifacts is definitely one of them. In this study we take a small step to further the development of the cultural artifacts utilizing the traditional motif.
