An Assessment of the Protestant Ethic Scale: Focused on Reliability.

Abstract

This paper attempted to investigate the psychometric properties of the Protestant Ethic Scale (PES) introduced by Mirels and Garrett. That is, the structure of the PES, dimensionality, the fidelity coefficients, the phi coefficients, method artifact, reliability (Cronbach's alpha and omega), and validity (construct validity and discriminant validity) were examined. The results of the analyses show that the PES is a four-dimensional construct. The PES is deficient in reliability that even inflated due to method artifact. In order to increase Cronbach's alpha, it is recommended that several items of the PES be deleted from the PES. Although the examined validity of the PES is established, it is shown to be sample specific.
