Abstract
The purpose of this study was to compare the number of condensation occurrences and the required pre-heat coil capacity according to type of energy recovery ventilator (ERV) and the difference of latent effectiveness in the ERVs. Because of revised ventilation regulations, buildings in Korea have been required to install mechanical ventilation systems. As the rotary type ERV (enthalpy wheel) has better latent effectiveness than that of the plate type ERV, the latent effectiveness difference between two types shows different condensation occurrences that would result in performance degradation. The enthalpy wheel with 80% of sensible and latent effectiveness indicated 99% less condensation occurrences and was required to install 89% smaller capacity of the pre-heat coil than that of the ERV with 80% of sensible and 30% of latent effectiveness during winter. Additionally, ERVs with low latent effectiveness cause more condensation under low room temperature in summer. Thus, installation of the enthalpy wheel rather than the plate type ERV would prevent the occurrences of condensation and reduce the need of a pre-heat coil with huge capacity.
