Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine the differences in cardiorespiratory function, blood pressure, and hemorheological responses according to wearing and non-wearing KF94 masks during prolonged aerobic exercise in adult men during the COVID-19 epidemic. The subjects were 12 healthy adult males aged 20 to 29 years (28.3±3.6 yrs), and were recruited after approval from the H University Institutional Review Board (IRB). The exercise intensity of the anaerobic threshold level was calculated through the maximum graded exercise test, and exercise was performed with a cycle ergometer for 40 minutes. Cardiorespiratory function, blood pressure, and hemorheological responses were measured at rest and during exercise every 10 minutes. For all data processing, two-way repeated measures ANOVA, repeated one-way ANOVA, and least significant (LSD) were performed using SPSS 23.0. As a result, all the variables of cardiorespiratory function (Rf, VT, VE, VCO2, VO2, R, FiO2, FiCO2, PaCO2, PAO2) increased with the passage of time according to wearing a mask and not wearing a mask during a 40-minute cycling exercise. VE was high in the non-wearing group (p<.05). However, there was no difference in blood pressure (SBP, DBP, MAP, RPP). In WBC, wearing KF94 was higher than that of non-wearing, but it was lower in RBC deformation index (p<.05). In conclusion, in the case of healthy males, wearing a KF94 mask during prolonged exercise does not significantly affect cardiorespiratory function, blood pressure, and hemorheological responses. However, the results of this study suggest that respiratory resistance and cardiac load are expected to increase in respiratory patients or cardiovascular patients, so wearing KF94 during exercise may affect cardiopulmonary parameters.
