데이터 기반 작품 "Incognito Visit"에 나타난 데이터 음악화에 관한 연구

Abstract

본 논문은 김가현의 데이터 인터랙티브 작품인 <Incognito Visit>을 분석하고 이를 통해 데이터를 전자음악작곡에 어떻게 활용할 수 있을지 연구하기 위해 쓰여졌다. 음악과 직접적 관련이 없는 자연 현상과 같은 데이터를 어떻게 음악적 아이디어로 적용하고, 음악 요소들에 적절히 연결할 수 있는지 그 가능성을 알아보고 데이터와 컴퓨터 간의 상호작용을 이용하는 확장된 인터랙티브 음악의 개념에 대한 고찰을 통해 탐구하고자 한다. 본문에는 <Incognito Visit>에서 사용된 데이터가 어떠한 작곡자의 의도에 따라 선정 되었고, 그 데이터들이 작품이 시작되어 마무리 되기까지 어떤 과정을 거쳐 신시사이저와 픽스드 사운드를 통해 음악으로 구현되는지 설명되어 있다. 전반적인 작품 원리와 흐름을 파악한 후에는 구체적으로 작곡자가 어떻게 데이터를 구조나 형식과 같은 음악적 아이디어로 발전 시켰는지 살펴볼 수 있다.; This paper focuses on an analysis of the author’s interactive music composition “Incognito Visit”. The primary focus is on how data not directly related to music, but rather derived from natural or other phenomena, can be applied to musical ideas and appropriately connected to musical elements. A secondary focus is an extended definition of interactive music: where the interaction takes place between data and computer. Although there is always the risk that sound derived from data, used in the context of interactive music, can occasionally be too artificial to describe composer’s musical aesthetic, this analysis shows how data can be mapped to create sonic results, and refined to make the music more natural and “humanized”, in order to fit the composer's intentions. This is shown by exposing the compositional workflow from start to finish, explaining the choice of data, application of algorithms, choice of synthesizer for sound realization, creation of fixed media sounds included in the composition's performance, and overall compositional decisions concerning format and structure. The analysis of “Incognito Visit” therefore shows how data has a lot of potential to be a great source of interaction between sound and computer in order to create electronic music.
