- Abstract
Sedimentary rocks make up an increasing percentage of subjects for paleomagnetic studies. Their magnetization, primary or secondary, resides in the different types of naturally occurring magnetic compounds. Ferrimagnetic minerals such as magnetite, maghemite, titanomagnetite, monoclinic pyrrhotite and antiferromagnetic minerals including hematite and goethite comprise the major magnetic minerals in sedimentary rocks. Magnetite, the most important magnetic mineral in most rocks derived directly or as detrital particles from igneous activities, is thought to be formed diagenetically in many Paleozoic limestones and carried stable secondary magnetization. It has been reported that the diagenetic magnetite occurs as large (3-20 f.IID in diameter) spherical crystal aggregates and is responsible for well-defined magnetic fabrics from the anisotropy of anhysteretic susceptibility (AAS) studies.
