Abstract

Today a furniture is something that adds convenience to human lives and needs to be beautiful. A furniture is made from various materials and composed of numerous components whose respective roles are crucial in the completion of the handiwork called ’furniture ’ As you see, each component has their value of existence in their ’functioning roles' more than anything else. Among the components, there is one whose design is emphasized no less than its function, a handle. Along with the development in the furniture design, handle design has changed ever since. From crass simple metallic handles, it has developed and showed a great potential of versatility by being combined with many sort of materials, and now it has come to the time it spearheads the furniture design over the realm of being an appealing point. So a handle has become the crucial element which controls the overall furniture image, claiming its variation and individuality. The furniture industry is one that is typically oriented toward domestic consumption and therefore really susceptible to economic conditions. The most short-lived component of the furniture with such peculiarity is a furniture handle. Under such condition, excepting a few major makers, most handle makers that share their lot with furniture makers and that has limited resources cannot even think of the research and development for furniture handles. It is a reason why it is an item that is highly burdensome for a maker to develop a new product, and why it is with many cases of piracy damaging the original developers. An average lifespan for a product of handle is 6 months at the longest, hardly lasting for a season. The part of gravity that handles claim in the furniture has increased. Its gravity in the cost has more than tripled. Therefore, now it is the time that they find a way of lowering the production cost by both simplifying the production line and motivating the positive will of developing designers of metallic craftsmanship, rather than having them stick to simple plagiarism of ideas. Nowadays, handles with just simple function are on the decline, but the objects of craft work which maximize the aesthetic sense by using various elements are emerging as the mainstream, while increasing their value by also giving considerations to their ergonomics. It is true that we are at the stage for metallic craftsmen should be involved in the effort. The study aimed to add the functionality and ornamentality to a furniture by using metallic elements and suggest a theoretical background and a formative frame for the use of metallic elements in the contemporary furniture design, while analyzing the kind and the type of the metallic materials that are often used, the ways of making the most of their use in the furniture design, also pointing to the problems by analyzing their functions and designs, and suggesting a direction for the development of metallic handles.
