이원용이 일제강점기 한국 근대 스포츠 발전에 미친 영향

Abstract

본 연구의 목적은 스포츠 행정가와 스포츠 언론인으로서 다양한 활동을 펼친 이원용이 일제시기 스포츠 발전에 미친 영향을 살펴보고자 하는 것이다. 이원용이 1914년 조직한 오성구락부라는 야구팀은 경성에 있던 일본 최강팀을 제압해 조선인들의 사기를 진작시켰다. 그는 1920년 일제하 조선의 스포츠 발전에 근간이 되는 조선체육회 창립을 주도했다. 게다가 그는 1922년 미국 프로야구 올스타 팀과 조선 팀의 국제 스포츠 이벤트를 기획하여 엄청난 입장수입을 올렸다. 1929년 시작된 경평 축구전도 그가 만든 이벤트였다. 이 경기는 조선에서 가장 큰 양대 도시 간의 경기로 치열한 지역적 라이벌 의식으로 상업적 성공을 거뒀다. 스포츠 언론인으로서 1933년 그는 당시 조선 유일의 스포츠 잡지인 조선체육계를 창간하기도 했다. 이처럼 다양한 스포츠 분야에서 이뤄진 그의 개척자적인 노력을 고려하면 이원용이 일제시기 조선 스포츠의 주춧돌을 놓았다고 해도 과언이 아니다. The aim of this study is to examine the impact of Lee Won-yong as a sports administrator, and sports journalist on the development of Korean sports during Japanese colonialism. Ohsung baseball club organized by Lee in 1914 could raise morale of the Koreans by winning over the most powerful Japanese baseball club located in Gyunggsung. In 1920, he led to the foundation of Chosun Sports Association which would be a basis for developing Korean sports under Japanese imperialism. In addition, he masterminded an international sports event in which American professional all star baseball team had a game against Korean team with a tremendous gate money in 1922. The Gyung-Pyeong football match starting from 1929 was also his brainchild. This game between the two most biggest cities in Korea achieved commercial success with fierce regional rivalry. As a sports journalist he founded the Korea's only sports magazine at the time entitled Chosun Cheyukgye in 1933. Given his pioneering efforts made in such a variety of sports areas, it would be no exaggeration to say that he laid a cornerstone in the foundations of Korean sports during Japanese colonialism.
