연암 박지원의 소설에 나타난 老莊思想 고찰

Abstract

본고는 연암 박지원의 대표작인 「호질」과 「허생전」에 나타난 연암의 노장사상을 살펴, 연암 사상의 풍부함을 이해하는 데 기여하고자 한 것이다. 먼저 연암 문학에 나타난 도가와의 관련성을 살펴보았다. 연암은 젊은 시절부터 노자와 장자를 섭렵하고 풍부한 이해에 도달해 있었다. 특히 연암은 차별적 세계관을 극복하는 방편으로 도가사상을 적극 끌어들였다. 차별을 전복하는 도구로 똥이라는 기호를 활용했다. 연암은 장자의 똥과 기와조각, 벽돌을 활용해 차등적 세계관을 전복하거나 새로운 인간관을 제시하였다. 연암은 유학의 세계관에서는 존재의 차별을 극복할 만한 마땅한 근거를 찾지 못했다. 그리하여 도가의 세계관에서 차별적 세계관을 극복하고자 했다. 이를 바탕으로 연암의 도가적 세계관이 그를 대표하는 소설에서는 어떻게 드러나고 있는지를 살펴보았다.「호질」에서는『장자』에 나오는 ‘발총지유’와 「胠篋」「盜跖」편과의 관련성을 살폈다. 연암은 북곽 선생을 통해 발총지유의 행태를 구체적으로 보여주었다. 『장자』의 「거협」「도척」편은 유가의 예법과 윤리를 비판하고 위선을 버리고 천성대로 따르는 삶을 살아가라고 말한다. 「호질」의 주제 역시 인간과 자연이 평화롭고 소박한 삶을 영위해가야 한다고 말한다. 곧 「호질」은 자연을 표상하는 범을 통해 인간의 사욕과 위선을 풍자한 작품이다. 연암은 유학자들의 위선과 아첨, 인간의 사욕과 야만성에 깊은 문제의식을 느끼고 도가사상을 끌어와 인간의 허위성을 폭로하였다. 「허생전」에서는 무인도에 나타난 노장사상에 대해 살펴보았다. 허생의 섬은 유교의 지식 체계와 예법 체계를 부정한 공간이었다. 이는 無知와 無爲를 지향하는 노장사상과 통하고 있었다. 또한 무인도의 모습은 노자의 小國寡民과 장자의 至德之世를 닮아 있었다. 따라서 허생이 말한 德은 유가의 덕보다는 도가의 덕과 더욱 가까웠다. 연암의 소설에 나타난 노장사상의 흔적은 도가사상이 조선 후기 지식인들에게 얼마나 큰 영향을 끼쳤는지를 잘 말해준다고 하겠다. The purpose of this paper is to contribute to understanding the richness of Yonam"s thoughts by examining Yonam"s Taoist ideology in Yonam Park Ji-won"s representative works, Hojil and Heaengjeon. First, the relationship with Doga in the Yeonam literature was examined. Yeonam has reached a rich and understanding of Lao-tzu and Chuang-tzu since childhood. In particular, Yonam actively attracted Taoist ideology as a way of overcoming the differential worldview. He used the symbol of shit as a tool to overthrow discrimination. Yeonam overthrew the differential worldview or suggested a new human view by utilizing the dung, shit, and brick of the eldest son. Yeonam found no good reason to overcome the discrimination of existence in the worldview of studying abroad. Thus, he attempted to overcome the discriminatory worldview in the Taoist worldview. Based on this, I examined how the fictional worldview of Yeonam is revealed in his novel. In Hojil(호질), I examined the relationship between ‘balchongjiyu(발총지유)’ and Geohyeob(거협), Docheog(도척). Yeonam showed the behavior of ‘balchongjiyu(발총지유)’ in detail through Buggwagseonsaeng(북곽선생). The chapter of Chuang-tzu, Geohyeob(거협), Docheog(도척), tells us to criticize the statutes and ethics of Confucian, to give up hypocrisy and to live according to nature. The theme of Hojil also says that humans and nature should go for a peaceful and simple life. In other words, Hojil is a work that satirizes human desire and hypocrisy through the tiger, the symbol of nature. Yeonam had a critical mind on the hypocrisy and flattery of the Confucian scholars, human desire and brutality, and brought out the Taoist ideology to expose human falsehood. In Hesheonjeon, we looked at the Taoist statues on the desert island. The island of Hezeun was a space that denied Confucian knowledge and courtesy systems. This was connected with the idea of Tao that aims for ignorance and nothing. Also, the uninhabited island resembles Lao-tzu"s small country-a small people and Chuang-tzu’s ‘Jidukjise(至德之世)’. Thus, virtue that Hesseng said was closer to the Taoism than to the Confucianism. The traces of the Taoist thought in Yeonam"s novels tell us how great the influence of Taoist thoughts on the intellectuals of the late Joseon Dynasty.
