Due to changes such as the spread of individualism and the increase of single-person households throughout society, one-person consumption trends that value their own tastes have been intensifying. In the case of art performances, the so-called “Hongongjok,” the number of single-person audience who watches performances alone, is already close to half, and the proportion is rapidly increasing. Nevertheless, there is a lack of understanding and systematic research on single-person audiences in the field of art performances. This study introduced the concept of ‘self-gift’, which symbolizes the recent trend of valuing one’ tastes and consuming only for oneself. Classical music performance fits the concept of self-gift in that it is the purchase of an unusual and special aesthetic experience and is relatively expensive. Therefore, this study intended to examine the effect of each component that constitutes the classical music performance on the intention of the self-gift. It also analyzed whether these effects are different between one-person audience and two or more audiences. The components of classical music performance as experience materials were divided into performance products, which are the core service quality, and performance facilities, convenience, staff services, and marketing elements, which are the peripheral service qualities. This study then identified the impact each has on the perceived value of classical music performance. In addition, the effect of the performance group (performer)’s reputation, which is a characteristic of classical music performances, and the moderating effect of prior knowledge of classical music were also reflected in the research model. The result shows that all of the components of classical music performances, except for facilities, had a significant effect on the perceived value. Reputation also had a positive effect on the perceived value and the moderating effect of prior knowledge of classical music was confirmed. And the perceived value of classical music performance had a significant effect on the intention of self-gift, but not on the intention of others. This is consistent with previous research’s claim that the experienced goods have low satisfaction for others as gifts. In addition, through the multi-group analysis, the difference between two or more audiences and one-person audience was examined, and it was identified that convenience, staff services and marketing elements of one-person audience were significantly greater effect than those of two or more audiences. On the other hand, two or more audiences considered the reputation more important. And, there were differences in the impact of each service component on the perceived value and the gift-giving intention, depending on gender and age. This study focused on identifying whether classical music performances can be attracted to potential audiences by positioning them as a self-gift, and what effective ways to do so. Accordingly, for the purpose of understanding the behavior of self-gift more carefully, an additional analysis was conducted to identify which people with self-gift motives perceived the high value of the classical music performance (Research Model II). As a result of the analysis, the motivation for reward, therapeutic personal disappointment, and therapeutic negative mood reduction of the self-gift had a significant effect on the perceived value of classical music performances. This is consistent with the results of previous research that reward and therapeutic are the key motivations for self-gift. It was also supported through the multi-group analysis that there was a significant difference in the effect of self-gift motivation between one-person audience and two or more audiences, which resulted in significant differences in motivation for therapeutic personal disappointment, and therapeutic negative mood reduction. This shows that one-person audiences are likely to choose classical music performances as their self-gift in anticipation of the therapeutic effects of classical music. This research has a discriminatory contribution in that it proved for the first time that there is a possibility of revitalizing the market for classical music performances, which has been stagnant in growth, by marketing a classical music performance as a self-gift. And, this study contributed to the fact that it provided theoretical understanding and practical implications on which service components should be strengthened and which audience groups should be targeted.-
