용담검무의 역사성과 한계성

Abstract

수운 선생이 종교적 의식의 하나로 추었던 용담검무는 우리나라의 검무가 걸어온 역사적 전통에 견주어볼 때 가장 위 시대에 해당되는 검무와 그 정신적인 맥을 같이하는 검무이다. 즉 우리나라의 검무가 역사적 흐름에 따라 변천되면서 잃어버린 '제의적(察儀的)인 면'과 '무예적인 면'을 그대로 간직한 채 수운 선생에 의하여 다시 재현된 검무이다. 이와 같은 용담검무는 그 사상적 배경으로는 동학이 열어나가고자 하는 후천 개벽에의 의지를 담고 있다. 즉 용담검무는 우리의 전통적 사상을 그 바탕으로 하고 있는 동학이라는 종교의 의식에서 거행되었으며, 또 이러한 의식을 통하여 도달하는 천인합일(天人合一)의 경지와 이 천인합일을 통하여 새로운 세계를 열어가고자 하는 열망을 그 내면에 담고 있는 검무이다. 용담검무가 수운 선생에 의하여 춤으로 추어질 때, 이의 배경 음악이 되었던 「검결」이라는 노래가 있었다. 따라서 이와 같은 「검결」을 보다 상세히 분석하게 되면, 그 내면에 보다 내밀히 종교적 희열과 후천의 세상을 열어가고자 하는 시대적 열망이 폭 넓게 담겨져 있음을 알 수가 있다. 따라서 본 논문은 우리나라 검무가 걸어온 길을 중심으로 용담검무가 지닌 역사성을 밝히는 한편, 용담검무의 배경 음악이 되며, 또 대본이 되는 「검결」을 분석하므로, 용담검무의 외연성과 내연성을 밝히고, 나아가 용담검무가 지향하는 세계를 밝히고 있다. 즉 이와 같은 「검결」을 그 대본으로 하여 추는 '용담검무'는 다름 아닌 새로운 질서의 삶인 동귀일체(同歸一體)의 세상을 열어가고자 하는, 우리 민중 모두의 살아 있는 몸짓임을 밝히고 있다. 이와 같은 면에서 보면, 용담검무의 '칼'은 죽임의 칼이 아니라, 베어서 오히려 살리는 진리의 칼이며, 상생(相生)의 칼이 된다. 그러므로 이와 같은 용담검무가 지닌, 후천을 향한 정신이 담긴 춤사위를 통하여, 잠재되어 있는 우리의 민족 정기를 다시 회복하고, 화해와 상생(相生)의 새로운 문화를 창조할 수 있을 것으로 기대된다. 아울러 이러한 논의를 통하여 본 논문은 용담검무가 지닌 현재성과 그 의의를 찾고 있다. Yong-Dam Sword Dance that Suwoon used to perform as one of the religious rites is spiritually connected with the earliest type of sword dances in Korean history. In other words, Suwoon's sword dance represented the recurrence of the traditional Korean sword dance maintaining ritual and martial implications that had vanished in the change of the Korean traditional dances. Yong-Dam Sword Dance connotes as its ideological background the will of postcreation that Dong Hak has been pursuing. That is to say, Yong-Dam Sword Dance was performed as a religious rite of Dong Hak and it implied the aspiration for a state of "Chun-In-Hap-Il" (meaning "A thousand men united into one") and for the opening of a new world through this state. The background music called "Gum-Gyeol" was played in accompaniment of Suwoon's sword dance. Analyzing this "Gum-Gyeol" music in details, we can see that it expresses comprehensively the aspiration of the time to realize religious happiness and open a new world. Therefore the purpose of this paper is to define the historical implication of Yong-Dam Sword Dance based on the traces of the Korean traditional sword dances, to ascertain denotative and connotative senses of Yong-Dam Sword Dance by analyzing its background music and script, "Gum-Gyeol", and to identify the world which the Sword Dance was aiming at. In other words, Yong-Dam Sword Dance represents a living gesture of the populace toward realization of a new order, "Dong-Gui-Il-Chei" (meaning that people with different minds get united in one mind by the Grace of Han-Ul-Nim). In this regard, the sword in Yong-Dam Sword Dance is not meant as a tool used for killing, but it is the sword of mutual survival that brings life by cutting, on the contrary. Therefore, it is expected that every movement of Yong-Dam Sword Dance will restOre the spirit of the Korean people and will create a new culture of harmony and mutual survival. Through discussion in this context, this paper verifies the significance that Yong-Dam Sword Dance offers at the present time.
