변영주 감독 영화 속 사회 비판적 메시지에 관한 고찰

Abstract

본 연구에서는 ˂밀애˃(2002), ˂발레 교습소˃(2004), ˂화차˃(2012) 등 변영주 감독의 장편 극영화 세 편을 중심으로 그의 영화 속에 투영된 사회 비판적메시지에 대한 구명을 시도하였다. 변영주 감독은 여성 감독이 살아남기 힘든한국영화계의 풍토 속에서도 꾸준히 사회비판적인 시각을 견지해오고 있다. 이는 여성 운동과 학생 운동, 그리고 그 일환으로써의 다큐멘터리 운동이 활발하였던 1980년대에 대학 생활을 한 변영주 감독의 성장 과정에서 비롯된 특징이라 할 수 있다. 그의 장편 극영화에서는 공통적으로 다음과 같은 세 가지 특성이 드러난다. 첫째 한국 사회의 가족주의적 이데올로기에 대한 비판의식, 둘째신자유주의 경제 체제의 틈입으로 급격히 변화된 한국 사회의 모습과 이로 인해 계급화된 인물들의 양상, 셋째 사회적 약자와 연대하지 않게 된 사회에 대한 비판과 사회적 약자를 향한 차별 없는 시선 등이 그것이다. 이러한 영화적 특징은 한국 사회가 가진 문제들에 대한 비판 지점을 제공할 뿐 아니라 한국 사회가 나아갈 방향의 이정표 역할을 한다는 점에서 의의를 지닌다. This study explores the social commentary of the films directed by Byun Young-joo, a leading female film director in Korea, focusing on her three feature-length films: Deep Loves (2002), Flying Boys (2004), and Helpless (2012). Byun Young-joo has consistently maintained a critical view of society in her works despite being in the Korean film industry where female directors often struggle to survive. The socially critical characteristics of Byun Young-joo’s films can be attributed to Byun’s background as a university student in 1980s Korea marked by feminist movements and protests for democratization, which was accompanied by the documentary movement. Her feature-length films share three common characteristics. First, they carry a critical awareness of the familist ideology of Korean society. Second, the films reflect the rapid transformation of Korean society following the invasion of the neo-liberalism economic system, and the characters embody the social hierarchy that emerged as its outcome. Third, the films present a social commentary on Korean society’s disaffiliation from the socially vulnerable and view social minorities from a perspective that is free of discrimination. These characteristics set Byun Young-joo’s works not only as a base-point for critically understanding the problems of Korean society but also as a milestone for Korean society.
