영어연극이 영어 구사력에 미치는 영향에 관한 연구

Abstract

본 연구는 EFL 상황의 대학생 학습자들을 대상으로 영어연극이 영어 말하기 능력에 미치는 영향에 대해 알아보는 것을 목적으로 하고 있다. 실제 공연 사례를 바탕으로 영어연극 활동 전과 후의 학습자들의 말하기 능력 변화를 살펴봄으로써 영어연극의 언어교수·학습도구로서의 효용성을 알아보고자 하였다. 이를 위하여 서울특별시 소재 H대학교 영어영문학부 영어동아리 소속의 지원자 남녀 대학생 8명을 연구 대상으로 선정하였다. 연극 연습과 공연은 9주간에 걸쳐 진행되었다. 영어연극연습을 시작하기 전의 사전 검사와 공연 이후의 사후 검사를 실시하고 학습자들의 발화내용을 각각 녹취하였다. 그리고 이를 정확성, 유창성 그리고 복잡성의 측면에서 분석하고 학습자들의 말하기 능력이 어떻게 변화하였는지 살펴보았다. 또한 연극 활동 이전에 실시된 사전기초조사, 영어 교수·학습 도구로서의 영어연극에 대한 학습자들의 인식을 알아보기 위한 설문조사, 그리고 녹음과 비디오 촬영이 사용되었다. 이와 같은 과정을 통해 얻은 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 학습자들의 발화를 정확성(accuracy)의 측면에서 분석한 결과, 학습자들 대부분이 비슷한 오류를 보이는 것으로 나타났다. 이들 오류들은 사전과 사후에 비슷한 양상으로 나타나는 경향이 있었으나 사전에 비하여 사후에는 이들 오류출현의 횟수가 다소 줄어든 것으로 볼 때, 학습자들의 문법적 정확성에 긍정적 변화가 있는 것으로 여겨진다. 둘째, 사전에 비하여 학습자들의 사후 발화의 유창성(fluency)은 큰 폭으로 향상되었다. 발화의 양이 늘어나고 내용도 보다 구체적으로 변하였다. 또한 발화 가운데의 휴지와 머뭇거림의 횟수와 길이가 크게 줄어들었다. 학습자들은 영어 연극 활동을 함으로써 영어말하기에 자신감이 생기고 영어로 표현하는 것에 자연스럽게 대처할 수 있게 된 것이라 할 수 있다. 셋째, 학습자들의 발화의 양이 크게 늘어난 것에 비하여 학습자들은 여전히 낮은 수준의 비슷한 단어와 구문을 반복적으로 사용하는 것으로 나타났다. 이로 인해 학습자들의 발화를 복잡성(complexity)의 측면에서 분석한 결과, 그 변화의 정도가 미약했다. 넷째, 사후 설문조사 결과, 학습자들은 영어연극의 언어 교육적 효용성에 대해 긍정적으로 답하였다. 연극 활동은 성취감과 자신감을 갖게 하고 말하기의 유창성에 도움이 되었다고 밝혔다. 또한 작품의 선택과 외국인 강사의 지도에 대해서도 긍정적으로 인식하였으며 영어교수·학습도구로서의 연극 활동의 효용성의 극대화를 위한 개선점으로 집중적인 외국인 강사의 지도와 대본의 내용에 대한 체계적 교육을 들었다. 이러한 연구 결과는 영어 연극 활동이 학습자들의 영어 말하기 능력에 긍정적인 영향을 줄 수 있음을 시사한다. 따라서 실제 수업환경에 대한 고려를 바탕으로 영어연극이 영어 교육 현장에 활용된다면, 영어교육의 궁극적인 목표인 의사소통 능력 신장에 도움이 될 수 있을 것이다.; The purpose of this study is to analyze the effect of English drama on English speaking ability focused on university students. For this purpose, the study was done with eight university students who attend H university in Seoul as the selected subjects. The data collection was done through the tests taken before and after the drama performance, voice recordings of tests, video recording of the play, and questionnaires for nine weeks. The tests recorded and described were analyzed in three parts, which were accuracy, fluency and complexity, to see a change of students' speaking ability. The main results of this experimental study are as follows: First, most students showed similar errors in accuracy. Although those errors appeared both in pre and post test, the frequency of the errors was quite reduced in the post test. Therefore, it is considered that the accuracy in students' speaking was improved. Second, students showed significant progress in fluency after drama performance. The quantity of the speaking was increased and the number and the length of pause were decreased. Student obtained the confidence in speaking English and they became accustomed to dealing with English through the drama performance for nine weeks. Third, in complexity, there was no significant change comparing with accuracy and fluency part. It is because students used the repeated structures and words even if there was a high increase in the quantity. Fourth, analyzing further questionnaire, it was found that students think a drama performance is helpful for English study. Students said it gave them confidence in English. It was also found that students had a positive impression on the choice of the play they made and native speakers' instructions for their pronunciation which were done twice a week for a month, However, students pointed a need of the explanations on the contents of the story to help students' understanding to make the drama performance more effective on English study. As the above results of this study suggest, a drama performance has effects on students' English speaking ability. If this technique is applied to the English education field, it will be able to make contributions for the improvement in communicative competence which is the ultimate aim of English.
