Abstract
Labor is the core of the production process in capitalistic societies. Workers sell their labor for a living. Employers apply the labor to the production of commodities. Capitalism aims for the maximum profit, while the workers pursue a quality life style. A very important issue between the labor force and business owners is number of hours worked. The reform bill of Aug 2003 revised the Labor Standard Laws and reduced the work week from 44 hours to 40 hours. From now on the workers work 8 hours a day, 5 days a week. Saturdays and Sundays are now work free. This research paper studies the effects of the Five Day Work Week System on family life; under the current 5 days a week system how have workers' relations with their significant others been affected. Specifically what are the current dynamics this system has between married couples and their children. The process of study was as follows. First, I examined employer's attitudes towards the Five Day Work Week System. Second, I analyzed the effects of increased non-working hours on marital relations. Third, I investigated the effects of increased non-working hours on workers by income level. The results are as follows 1. The expectations of the Five Day Work Week System was different between men and women. The women's expectations of the Five Day Work Week System were higher than those of men's before and after the reform bill of 2003. Women regarded the increase of spare time as important for self development. Men regarded the increase as important for recreation and relaxation. 2. Attitudes about the Five Day Work Week System were also affected by age. Between the age of 20-30 subjects indicated that more time spent among family members was important. Subjects in the 40-49 range cited that more time for self development was important. Subjects over 50 felt the Five Day Work Week System would give them more leisure time. 3. The relations among family members and between married couples improved, but the Five Day Work Week System had little effect on the lessening of familial conflicts. 4. The increase of non working hours did not appear to lead to self development. Particularly with subjects in their thirties who had little time to cultivate self development. The Five Day Work Week System doesn't actually lessen the number of hours worked because working hours are extended on weekdays.
