Social interest in children library is raising and a large number of childrenlibraries are currently constructed, however, consideration for external area ofchildren library seems to be still insufficient. For the construction of childrenlibrary, exterior space of children library, landscape space, is limited to plantingtrees and simple resting space, while interior of the building carries outsystematical education program and interest motivation to children. The placewhich supports not only passive program functions such as reading, playingindoor games, etc, but educational, emotional and physical enhancement ofchildren and resting of parents and local communities is also needed. From thistrend, a study is carried out to suggest landscape design model for externalspace of children library which is upon process of remodelling or newconstruction.
As a method of this study, a study for the mind and behavior of childrenthrough former documentary records and domestic and overseas research examplewas carried out to derive landscape element program for children library. Thestudy through domestic examples were carried out through site investigation andits overseas example were carried out through former documentary records. As aresult of this study, a landscape architectural design model was suggested forSeoul city children library located in Sajik-Dong, Jongro-Gu, Seoul metropolitancity. Seoul city children library which has been the unique children library for 30years and currently daily have approximately 2,500 users as the first utilizationrecord was chosen for the target of this study.
The target had relatively low operation rate comparing to the area of exteriorspace, did not show the behavior of children owing to low use of resting placefor users, nor had sharing space with adults. Therefore, the fundamental directionof this study is set to children library for experience ecological study, and itsresults are as follows,
Firstly, ecological education space was established with expansion of green areato promote learning desire and physical and mental development of children, where plants and bugs are staying together, so that children are additionally ableto comprehend the curriculum they learned in library through experience.
Secondly, a deck was installed to observe ecological wet land as a facility ofexperience learning space, and observation at various flowers were derived withwild flowers garden which was set through the deck. A glasshouse wasestablished to allow the character of experience to promote emotional training andeducational function with direct planting of hub by children.
Thirdly, A space for recreation and community where children and parents orlocal community are able to share was established for physical and mentaldevelopment. In a recreation space, water front space was established to allowchildren playing through green and water, and social development was inducedthrough water and green with installation of composite playing board.
Fourth, a lawn was made within community space to allow children andparents to freely play and communicate, and linked with wild flowers garden. Inthis area, it is expected to carry out composition, exhibition, sketch contest, history review, planting and water game, etc as various outdoor programs forchildren.
Fifthly, A roof top garden in children library building for resting facility wasestablished and a program to remind history with scenary of Sajik-park is set. Moreover, pedestrian passage and driveway were separated for the priority ofchildren's maximum safety since the space is for children, and installation ofdeck and green and recreation space were designed for urethane pavement exceptentrance gate.
Landscape architectural design of children library shows the limitation since alarge number of children libraries are located in general libraries or withincommercial building. Therefore, this study is expected to be applied as afundamental data for landscape architectural design model for children librarywhich is remodeled from conventional children library or newly established.Management, operation and practical research for various programs developmentto promote creativity and emotional enhancement are required to accompany as aspace for children, parents and local community with more accomplishment of theresearch like this study.
