손창섭 소설 연구

Abstract

본고는 1950년대 본격적인 문학활동을 통해 독특한 문학세계를 형성한 손창섭을 대상으로 하여 그의 작품의 인물과 공간의 관계양상 분석을 중심으로 고찰해 보았다. 손창섭만의 독특한 문학세계는, ‘인간 모멸’과 전후의 현실에 대한 ‘냉소적 태도’로서 극단적인 결핍감을 나타낸다. 손창섭 소설만의 이런 독특함은 6.25라는 특수한 상황의 경험과 어린 시절 남 다른 삶을 살았던 작가의 삶이 있었다는 것을 간과 할 수는 없다. 이러한 영향은 손창섭 소설만의 특수한 배경으로 작품 안에서 유실된, 혹은 실상과 허상이 혼재된 정체성을 드러내며, 인물들의 정체성, 불안과 위기상태를 공간적으로 나타내고 있다. 그리고 작품 안에서 새롭게 창조된 공간을 통해 작가는 자신의 고유하고 독특한 정서와 의식을 나타낸다. 이것은 소설에서 나타나는 공간이라는 개념이 곧 객관화된 공간이 작가의 상상력이라는 주관화된 공간으로 재창조되어 생성되는 것임을 설명한다. 손창섭 소설에서 나타나는 ‘방’은 전후의 피폐한 삶의 공간으로 초조, 불안, 울분, 공포 그리고 권태가 그려져 있으며 견딜 수 없는 절망감에 숨이 막힐 것 같은 삶의 모습이 있다. 그러나 손창섭 소설의 피폐한 공간은 삶의 현실을 끊임없이 상기시키고 있으며 거주하는 병적인물들 역시 자신의 인간다운 삶에의 강렬한 의지를 나타내고 있음을 밝히고자 한다. 따라서 공간 안에 거주하는 인물간의 관계 양상을 통해 그들의 현실적 삶에 숨겨진 욕망을 살펴보고자 한다. 2장에서 손창섭 소설에 나타나는 공간 ‘방’은 등장인물들과 실존적 관계에 있다. 공간에 대한 인식은 삶의 인식이기에 작품에 나타난 공간의 구조와 의미를 찾아보는 것은 등장인물의 행위의 의미를 찾아보는 것은 물론 작가의 세계인식까지도 찾아 볼 수 있다. 손창섭은 공간을 매개로 인물들의 관계에서 인간의 무의식적 욕망이 발현시킨다. 등장인물들의 욕망의 양상은 끊임없는 타자와의 관계 맺기를 통해 드러나고 있다. 이들은 혈연관계의 소원함을 자신이 거주하는 공간을 일탈하여 이성적인 타자와 합일하고자하는 욕망의 향유적 자세로 나타나지만 이성적 타자와 합일을 이룰 수 없는 불구의 공간으로 나타난다. 또한 욕망의 또 다른 형상으로는 거주공동체내에 존재하는 이성적 타자와 동일화를 이루려는 모습이다. 이들은 자신의 이성적 타자와 동일화를 이루기 위해 이전과는 다른 적극적 자세로 자신의 희생의 자세를 보여준다. 그러나 이들 역시 이성적 타자와 동일화를 이룰 수 없는 분열된 공간에서 거주하고 있는 것이다. 이는 미약하게나마 타자와 현실 사이에서의 사회적 자아의 모습으로 살아가려는 긍정적인 자아의 모습인 것이다. 요약하자면 등장인물들은 자신들의 절망적 삶의 현실 이면에 행복 또는 지금과는 다른 새로운 삶을 꿈꾸며 열망하고 있는 것이다. 3장에서는 초기 손창섭 소설의 대부분의 공간은 황폐하고 어둡다. 이러한 상황은 인간에 대한 절망, 불신, 혐오를 끊임없이 반복하고 있는 것으로 나타나며 정상적인 사회질서에 편입할 수 없는 퇴폐적 모습이다. 그러나 이전에 피폐했던 삶의 공간에 균열을 내면서 사회적 공간의 밝음을 지향해나가며, 불구적 공간과 병리적 인물들이 인간다움 삶을 지향하고 있다. 이러한 상황들은 삶의 어두운 면과 명백한 대조를 이루면서 그의 작품 세계의 중요한 부분을 형성한다. 이런 경향은 등장인물에서도 나타나고 있다. 완벽한 이상적인 자아가 병적이고 퇴폐적인 인물들과 조화를 이루며 한 공간내에 존재한다는 것이다. 이것은 인간 존재에 대한 기존의 부정적 인식이 극복되는 것임을 알 수 있다. 4장에서는 실체적 공간에 드러난 인물들을 살펴본다. 손창섭 소설의 등장인물들은 무능 · 무력 · 권위를 상실한 남성인물들과 강한 생활력을 가진 매춘여성의 모티프와 하나의 짝을 이루었다고 할 수 있다. 남성인물들은 대부분 고학력의 무기력하고 무능력한 인물들로 사회질서에 규합하지 못하는 병적인 인물들로 존재한다. 그러나 손창섭은 무능력한 남성인물들의 존재를 통해서 50년 전후 우리 사회와 삶의 모습을 가장 정확하게 투사 하였다고 볼 수 있다. 손창섭 소설에서 여성들은 많은 교육을 받지 못하였지만 남성들보다 강한 생활력을 가졌으며 그 형상은 대부분이 창녀화 된 혹은 술집 여자로 등장한다. 이들은 생존공간에서 이중적으로 모습으로 존재한다. 우선 긍정적 여성은 생존의 공간에서 강인한 생활력을 지닌 누이의 모습으로 삶에 대한 강한 애착을 가진 여성으로 나타난다. 또한 어머니의 형상으로 나타나는 부정적 여성의 모습은 유년시절의 욕망의 결핍으로 인한 어머니에 대한 그리움의 단면으로 나타남을 알 수 있다. 손창섭 소설에 나타나는 부정적 공간과 병리적 인물들의 불구적 모습은 숨어 있는 삶에 대한 욕망인 것이다. 이러한 삶에 대한 욕망은 공간의 일탈과 균열을 통해 인간다운 삶에의 강렬한 의지를 나타내고 건강한 삶을 지향해 가는 과정에 의의를 찾을 수 있겠다.; This treatise is tendencious to study analysis between space with character doing to Son changseop that form the peculiar literature world through the 1950s. Peculiar literature world of Son Chang-Seop displays excessive shortage stuff as 'Cynical behavior' about after war actuality and 'Human scorn'. This uniqueness of Son Chang-Seop's novel can not ignore that there was writer's life who lived experience of special situation and childhood different from other people's that is Korean War. That these effect loses in work by peculiar background of Son Chang-Seop's novel, or real image and virtual image express mixed identity. And writer expresses his own peculiar emotion and consciousness through space created newly in work. This explains that is that Depersonalised space is creat agained as space that become subjectification by writer's imagination in novel. 'The room' that appear in Son Chang-Seop's novel is space of barren life after war and there are fretfulness, uneasiness, resentment, fear and fatigue have been painted and there is image of life that is likely to choke in despair subtraction that can not endure. Nevertheless, barren space of Son Chang-Seop's novel is reminding to do not run out actuality of life, and unsound persons are displaying strong artificial limb of life worthy of own human. Therefore, this research wishes to examine desire hidden in their realistic lives through relation aspect between character that inhabit inside space. In chapter 2, 'The room' that appear to Son Chang-Seop's novel wishes to investigate that is in existence relation with characters. Cognition about space is equal with cognition of life. So, It can know writer's cosmopolitan with meaning of character's action that look for meaning and space structure that show in work. Son Chang-Seop carried by space and do unconscious disire of human to appear out in characters' relation. Aspect of characters' desire is detected through forming relation with the other constantly. These appear by attitude enjoyment of desire which wish to unite with rational the other omitting space that oneself inhabits that petition of kin, but is detected to malformed space that can not accomplish rational the other and union finally. Also, it is image to accomplish rational the other and identification that another shape of desire exists in dwelling community. These show sacrifice in other active position to accomplish identification with their own rational the other. But, these also inhabit from partite space that these can not accomplish rational the other and identification either. This is positive ego to live between the other and social ego. In other words, characters are eagerly desired to dream and live new life differing with happiness or now on actuality of despair life. In chapter 3, most spaces of early Son Chang-Seop's novel are barren and dark. These circumstance is expose that is constantly repeating despair about human, disbelief, disgust and is decadent state that can not admit to normal public order. Nevertheless, to space of life that it impoverished crack intend brightness of social space at inside, and is intending life that crippled space and unsound persons becoming to human . These circumstances form his important work part accomplishing collating that is clear with dark page of life. This tendency is appearing in character. Perfect ideal ego harmonize with unsound and decadent character and those exist together inside space. Can know that this is contradictory realization about human existence is overcome. In chapter 4, examine known characters in tangible space. Characters of Son Chang-Seop's novel can speak that accomplished prostitution woman's motif and peer who have man persons and strong vitality that lose impotence, incompetence, authority. Man characters exist by unsound persons who do not rally to public order by most well-educated enervated and inefficient persons. But, Son Chang-Seop can projected most exactly image of around 1950s society and life through existence of inefficient man characters. Women do not take many educations in Son Chang-Seop's novel, but have stronger vitality than men, the image appears as most prostitute or barmaid. These exist in dualistic image from survival space. First, positive woman appears by woman with strong attachment about life in sister's image that have strong vitality from space of survival. Also, contradictory woman's image who appear in mother's shape is yearning section about mother by shortage of desire of infancy season. Image, contradictory space and crippled appearance of pathological persons who appear to Son Chang-Seop novel, is being desire about lurking life. Desire about these life can find the sense that is representing omission and strong will of life that becoming to human through crack of space, and intends healthy life.
