There have been a lot of papers to deal with meanings of verbs from a semantic point of view since the late 1970s. Cognitive Grammar (Langacker 1987) is one of the frameworks that have rent the theoretical backgrounds to many semantic publications. The purpose of this thesis is to examine the meaning of the verb pass and the phrasal verb which is composed of pass and a particle, such as away, by, over, through, for, off, and up. What I have especially tried to show in this thesis is that the uses of the various meanings of the verb pass are not a coincidence but a logical consequence. In this thesis in chapter 2, I have briefly presented the summary and problems of Lee (2002)[이기동 2002] and Kim (2002)[김명숙 2000]. In chapter 3 and 4, I have examined the basic meaning of the verb pass and its extended meanings. I have analyzed pass as a relational predicate basically profiling a state in which the trajector go through or go along the landmark. And next, I have looked at the metaphorical meanings of pass. The metaphorical meanings of pass become different on the basis of Transfer, Succession in an exam, Taking time, Occurrence, Omission, and Disappearance. Through this profiling we see that the verb pass has a number of variants of the prototypical meaning. In chapter 5, I have also examined the meaning of pass in the phrasal verbs like pass away, pass by, pass over, pass through, pass for, pass off, and pass up. They are analyzed as the instances of meaning extension, either spatial or metaphorical. In chapter 6, I have concluded that the basic meaning of pass and its varied meanings, either spatial or metaphorical, form a network of meaning. I hope this thesis will be a guide to the right uses of English verbs, especially pass, and be of help in English learning.-
