Abstract
The complications and sequelae after the mandibular surgery, which were increasing in the field of dentistry and maxillofacial surgery recently, are related to inferior alveolar neurovascular bundles. They enter the mandibular canal through the mandibular foramen and pass anteriorly within the bone as far as mental foramen. The knowing of their positions would decrease the risk of mandibular surgery dramatically and would be used for the development of the new surgical techniques. This study was undertaken to clarify the anatomical position of mental foramen, mandibular canal and mandibular foramen for the mandibular surgery. Forty four mandibules(23 males and 21 females with average 66.5 years of age) obtained from the collection of the department of anatomy and cell biology of Hanyang medical college were studied. The position of mental foramen in relation to the mandibular teeth, the relation of mental foramen to the body of the mandible, the location of mental canal in the sections between premolars and molars and the location of mandibular foramen in the ramus of the mandible were measured. The obtained results were as follows; 1. The locations of mental foramina were the around the apex of the second premolar tooth in 82.9%. On average the distance across the mental foramen between the alveolar crest and the lower border of the mandibular body was 27.4 ± 2.4 ㎜ and between the inferior border of mental foramen and the lower border of mandibular body was 12.1 ± 2.3 ㎜. The position of mental foramen was 47.9 ± 6.9 % ratio of the mandibular body height. 2. The mandibular canal was located to lingual to the distal part of the mandibular body, ran anteriorly and crossed to the buccal, below the first and the second premolar tooth. In the sections between premolars and molars, the distance between the mandibular canal and the lower border of mandibular body was 8.9 ± 1.9 ㎜ at the position of the first molar, between the deepest point of the alveolar socket and the mandibular canal was 9.5 ± 3.5 ㎜ at the second molar, which was the narrowest point. 3. On average the distance from the mandibular canal to the mandibular notch was 22.0 ± 2.8 ㎜, to the mandibular angle 25.7 ± 3.8 ㎜ and to the coronoid process 39.1 ± 4.8 ㎜. The results of this study would be useful to decrease the risk of the mandibular surgery and to develop the new techniques for mandibul surgery in the field of the dentistry and maxillofacial surgery.
