김수영의 자유의식에 관한 연구

Abstract

Kim Soo-Young is considered a poet with a keen view and sense of awareness for the ideal and the real. He tried hard coincide his poems with poetics. He became aware of the importance of aesthetics in poetry by the confrontations he faced during the Japanese colonial rule, Korean War, division of North and South, and despotic rule. In this paper, I have examined Kim's awareness of the world, especially his consciousness of freedom, by researching his prose and poetry. Kim's prose and poetry, based on his consciousness of freedom, can bee seen as his efforts to reduce the gap between the absurd reality and the ideality of the world. I have analyzed Kim's prose and poems to examine the characteristics of his consciousness of freedom. Kim's pursuit of freedom led him to find Korean modernism. Furthermore, he tried various ways of creative writing and opened a new horizon for literature. This kind of new idea was possible because he understood 'Modernism' by relating it to reality. Kim sought true and honest freedom in the boundary between absurd reality and ideal world. He expressed his critical mind and literary sincerity towards reality as 'Total body poetics.' Kim's consciousness of freedom is his will to overcome the conflict between the absurd reality and existence. As an intellectual, Kim always strived to achieve sameness of one self. My research on Kim can be outlined as follows. First, the consciousness of freedom expressed through Kim's poetry and prose comes more than anything from the critical reality of the bourgeois mind. Having lived through the chaos and turmoil of his time led Kim to start self-reflection. This led him to have a critical mind about government and history. The frustration and despair he experienced in the April 19th Revolution spurred him to create a 'new poetics'. He rejected the traditional line of poetry and experimented with various forms and contents. Freedom to create free form and content was his way to become free from an oppressed society. The consciousness of freedom expressed in Kim's literary world can be attributed to sameness of one self. Kim did not dwell on the past believed it was his 'duty and his fate to continue to improve himself forever.' (from 'Joke of the Moon'). Secondly, Kim criticized idealistic and abstract modernism but pursued modernism that was Korean. He defined a new way of looking at objects and truth by a modern concept. His ability to confront reality allowed 'new poems' to be written and led to his belief and conviction about the importance of historical advancement and change. Furthermore, it became the power to break free from the absurdity of the past. Kim strongly criticized idealistic and abstract modernism and he thought that modernism should be based strictly on reality. He endeavored to break away from the absurd past and pursued new poetics to realize Korean modernism. Finally, Kim's view of the literary world centered on 'consciousness of freedom' provides us with guidance on how we should progress in the modern era. He believed the poem's form and content should be understood by aesthetics and modernism and he believed that a poem should achieve aesthetic maturity by revealing the reality in the world. It was a way to recover humanity and achieve freedom in the world. In order to overcome the tragic nature of reality, Kim emphasized the importance of recovering our humanity more than anything else. In conclusion, Kim's poems and poetics can be seen as a step to finding total self freedom. He tried to see the world by endless self reflection. The freedom he desired is achieved when one can truly understand and view the world in the right way. The consciousness of freedom in Kim's poetry and prose is without doubt an important stepping stone for modern literature.; 김수영은 현실과 이상세계를 날카롭게 바라보고 의식했던 시인으로 평가된다. 특히 그는 시와 시론을 일치시키기 위해 많이 노력하였다. 그의 시는 일제 강점기와 한국전쟁, 분단과 독재 정치의 사회적 혼란과 맞서면서 더욱 더 예술적 미학의 중요성을 인식하였다. 필자는 김수영이 남긴 산문과 시를 통해서 그의 세계인식, 특히 자유의식에 관해서 살펴보았다. 김수영의 산문과 시의 바탕을 이루는 자유의식은 부조리한 현실과 이상세계의 거리를 좁히고자 하는 노력이기도 하다. 필자는 김수영의 자유의식의 특징을 살펴보기 위해 그의 산문과 시를 함께 검토하였다. 이에 의하면 그가 추구한 자유의식은 우선 한국적인 모더니즘을 찾으려는 것으로 나타났으며, 나아가서 다양한 창작방법을 시도하였으며, '새로운 문학'의 지평을 여는 것으로 귀결되었다. 이러한 새로움은 그가 '현대성'을 구체적 현실과 관련지어 파악했기 때문에 가능했다. 그는 부조리한 현실과 이상적인 세계의 경계에서 진실한 자유, 정직한 자유를 추구했다. 현실에 대한 비판의식과 문학적 성실성에 대해 그는 이른바 '온몸의 시학'이라는 말로 표현하였다. 또한 김수영의 자유의식은 부조리한 현실과 존재의 갈등을 극복하려는 의지이기도 하다. 그리하여 그는 한 지성인으로서 자기 동일성을 이루기 위해 항상 노력하였다. 연구 결과를 좀 더 구체적으로 요약하면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 김수영의 시와 산문을 통해서 드러난 자유의식은 무엇보다도 비판적 현실로 인한 소시민 의식에서 잘 드러난다. 혼란스러운 역사를 온몸으로 부딪치면서 김수영은 자아의 성찰과 반성으로부터 출발되었다. 이것은 정치와 역사에 대한 비판정신으로 이어진다. 4.19혁명의 경험과 좌절은 김수영이 '새로운 시학'을 탄생시키는 계기가 되었다. 그는 또 전통적인 시 창작을 거부하고 시의 형식과 내용에 대해 다양한 방법을 시도하였다. 창작 형식과 내용에 있어서의 자유는 억압받던 사회로부터의 자유로 통할 수 있었다. 마지막으로 김수영의 문학세계에 나타난 자유의식은 자기 동일성 인식으로 귀결됨을 알 수 있었다. 그는 과거에 머물러 있지 않고 자아 동일성 획득을 위해 '영원히 나 자신을 고쳐가야 할 운명과 사명에 놓여(「달나라의 장난」에서)' 있다는 자각을 끝까지 놓치지 않았다. 둘째, 김수영은 관념적이고 추상적인 모더니즘을 비판하고 한국적 모더니즘을 추구하였다. 그는 진실과 사물을 보는 새로운 시각의 발견을 현대성으로 정의한 바 있다. 구체적 현실을 직시하는 힘은 '새로운 시’쓰기를 가능하게 하고, 역사 발전과 진보에 대한 확신으로 이어졌다. 또한 그것은 불합리한 과거와 단절하는 힘이 되기도 하였다. 그는 당시의 관념적이고 추상적인 모더니즘 시를 강하게 비판하면서 우리에게 맞는 모더니즘을 추구하려고 노력하였다. 여기서 철저한 현실인식을 바탕으로 고뇌하는 시가 되어야 한다는 논리가 나왔다. 그는 부조리한 과거를 단절하고 새로운 시학을 추구함으로써 한국적 모더니즘을 구현하려 노력하였다. 셋째, '자유의식'을 중심으로 한 김수영의 문학세계는 우리의 현대시가 나아가야 할 방향을 제시하고 있다. 김수영은 시의 형식과 내용을 예술성과 현대성으로 파악하고, 시가 진실한 세계를 드러내어 예술의 성숙을 이루어야 한다고 생각했다. 이러한 의식을 통해 잃어버린 인간성을 회복하고 자유세계에 도달할 수 있다는 것이다. 그는 비극적인 현실을 극복하기 위해서는 무엇보다도 인간성 회복이 절실하다는 것을 강조하였다. 결론적으로, 김수영의 시와 시론은 자아가 완전한 자유를 찾아가는 모색의 과정이었다고 할 수 있다. 그는 무엇보다도 세계를 바로 볼 수 있는 존재로 거듭나기 위해 끊임없이 자기 성찰에 몰두하였다. 이는 결국, 그가 염원하는 자유란 인간들이 세계를 바르게 이해하고 사유할 때 가능하다는 것이다. 김수영의 산문과 시에 드러난 이와 같은 자유의식은 우리현대문학사에서 새로운 전기를 마련할 만큼 중요한 것으로 인식된다.
