Abstract
Johann Sebastian Bach (1685~1750), the representative composer of the Baroque era, accomplished composing many works by completing the counterpoint and provided the structure of the harmonic music. Undoubtedly, like one the greatest artist of the era, by composing Partita No. 2 made for the unaccompanied violin, he maximized the use of the violin skill during the Cothen era in 1720. The first four movements in this music are Allamande- Courante- Sarabande- Gigue, and the last movement is Chaconne, a continuous variation form. In this thesis, I will analyze the Chaconne variation in the most widely played piece out of the six unaccompanied violin suites of Bach to be able to play it with more depth and systematically. As a research method, I will research in depth the suites of the Baroque era. Then, I will research the background of Chaconne, and compare the Chaccone and Passacaglia variation which have basso continuo and ostinato in common. The suite of the Baroque era, which is in the form of instrumental music, refers to the multi-movement work consisting of a few dance pieces. The Classical suite was established during this era with movements of Allamande, Courante, Sarabande and Gigue. Partita No. 2 in d minor follows this style in many aspects. Chaconne, the fifth movement of Partita No. 2 d minor was composed by Bach during the Cothen era from 1717 ~ 1723. During this time he mainly composed secular instrumental music. Among these works, six of them were Brandenburg concertos, six Suites for Violincello, and six unaccompanied Suites for Violin. Also Chaconne and Passcaglia, the music style of this era, originated from the ostinato figure but there is a difference between the two. In the case of Chaconne, the theme of the base is often used in other parts, and the harmonized melody is inserted in parts of the variation. The Passcaglia on the other hand, the repeated bassoostinato and the form of variation is limited to the theme. In this thesis, before analyzing Chaconne, I will research the composer’s background. Also by studying the Suites of this era, in particularly by comparing the two popular styles Chaconne and Passcaglia, I would like this thesis to help others to understand Chaconne musically and help play this music better.
