렉스스타우트의 미스터리 소설 <요리사가 너무 많다>의 희곡으로의 변용

Abstract

본 연구는 ‘미스터리적인 요소’와 ‘드라마의 특질’을 살핌으로써 미스터리 소설이 드라마적인 특질을 갖고 있다는 것을 제시하는 데에 그 일차적 목적을 두고 있다. 이는 역으로 드라마가 미스터리적 요소를 포함하고 있다는 것을 증명할 수 있는데, 이러한 과정은 미스터리 소설은 물론 드라마의 특질을 명확히 이해하는 데에 도움이 될 수 있다. 또한 본 연구의 이차적 목적은 미스터리 소설의 희곡적 변용 가능성을 찾는 데에 있다. 이러한 과정은 플롯 중심의 희곡이 이전보다 쇠퇴해 가고 있는 현재, 플롯이 탄탄한 희곡의 층을 두텁게 한다는 점에서 그 의의를 찾을 수 있을 것이다. 마지막으로 본 연구는 특정 미스터리 소설을 희곡으로 변용하는 과정을 제시함으로써, 미스터리 소설은 물론 소설 일반이 희곡으로 변용될 경우 처하게 되는 어려움을 제시하고 그 해결책을 찾아가는 데에 그 목적을 두고 있다. 이는 소설을 희곡으로 각색하는 과정에서 처할 수 있는 어려움을 해결해 나가는 데에 적으나마 도움이 될 것이다. 본 연구에서는 미스터리 소설 장르의 전반적인 특징을 토대로 미스터리 소설이 지닌 드라마적 특질을 살폈고, 이를 토대로 렉스 스타우트(Rex Stout, 1886~1975)의 미스터리 소설『요리사가 너무 많다』를 분석하고 희곡으로 변용했다. 희곡으로 변용하는 과정은 애거서 크리스티의 《쥐덫》을 전거로 삼아 진행되었다.; This thesis intends to present that mystery novel has the qualities of drama. This conversely can prove that drama has the special qualities of mystery novel. So the process can help to understand clearly not only the qualities of mystery novel but also the qualities of drama. The second purpose of this thesis is to find the possibility of dramatization of a mystery novel. It may be meaningful especially in the present the situation that the plot's function in a play has been of little importance because the process can help to find plays which has substantial plot. The third purpose of this thesis is to present difficulties which can happen in the course of dramatizing novel and to find solution about the difficulties. It can be of good help to the people who want to adapt a novel, not just a mystery novel, for a play. This thesis analyzed the mystery novel 『Too Many Cooks』by Rex Stout, and dramatized it to the dramatic qualities of mystery novel indicated in front. The process got some helps from the novel 『Three Blind Mice』by Agatha Christie.
