Abstract
This study intended to examine the correlation between size of nurturing institution and director's speciality recognition and role performance. We investigated which kind of support is necessary according to size of institution for enhancing efficient specialty and performance to provide basic informations for effective management of nurturing institution. In this context, the subject of study was discussed as the followings: 1. There is a difference in director's specialty recognition according to size of institution? 2. There is a difference in director's role performance according to size of institution? 3. There is a difference in the correlation between director's specialty recognition and role performance according to size of institution? The experimental survey was performed for 15 civil nurturing institutions in Kwangjin-gu, Seoul city. Based on the guidebook on nurturing of Seoul city, 15 institutions were classified in to three groups according to the number of nurturing children: small (21~39), middle (40-59), and big (60~over 100). For measuring the directors' speciality recognition, the questionaries used in the precedent studies were modified and deployed: the first was the questionnaire which had been originated from the study by Lindsay & Lindsay(1987) and both of Kim Hyerin (in 1993) and Lee Hyang (in 1995) modified and complemented, the other was made by modifying and complementing the questionnaire which was used in the studies by Kim Jiyun (1997), Cho Kyuhyeon(1997), and Lee Soojung (1999). Lee Kyung(2001). Director's role performance was measured using the self-rating tool, ECTRRS (Early Childhood Teacher's Rating Scale) developed by Cho Bukyung (1994) and Saracho (1997). The obtained results are as follows: It was firstly noticed that director's speciality recognition and role performance were good in the fields of nurturing. Especially, in the group of middle size institutions the director's speciality recognition and role performance were the highest. In the examination of correlation between director's specialty recognition and role performance, correlation was no significant irrespective of institution's size. The differences in speciality recognition were found according to gender, educational background, career in nurturing, career as a director in nurturing institution, grade of certificate, number of class and type of class. As far as role performance is concerned, there were differences in speciality recognition according to gender, career in nurturing, grade of certificate, number of class and type of class. This study showed the result that director's speciality recognition and role performance was higher in the middle size institution, which is on the contrary to the hypothesis that they would be higher in the big size institution. As a conclusion based on this result, this study suggests that an administrative and financial supports for the middle size institution should be provided through training program, seminar, and public hearing, to enhance continuously speciality recognition and role performance of directors of middle size institutions. In addition, a further study should be continued on director's speciality recognition and role performance according to actual condition of the fields to assist to improve quality of nurturing service.
