Abstract
Recently, most of enterprises are faced with the difficulties imposed by demands for improved productivity, global competition, and technological advances. In particular, on-time delivery of a variety of products with cost-effective small batch sizes plays an important role in surviving in the ever-increasing competitive environment where offshoring is widely exploited. Motivated by this, this work studies a methodology for determining economic lot sizes in consideration with costs incurred by setup, manufacturing, material handling, and defective products. Relationship among cycle time, WIP (Work-in-process), and throughput is established and a bottle neck process is identified based on Little's Law. EOQ (Economic Order Quantity) is then used to determine an economic lot size with regard to total production cost including material handling cost. To illustrate the proposed methodology, a case study is conducted with a real industry of PCB (Printed Circuit Board). The impact of various lot sizes on throughput, due date, and manufacturing cost is also investigated.
