가야 설화의 형성과 배경에 관한 연구

Abstract

가야 설화에 대한 연구는 주로 삼국유사에 실린 가락국기의 가야 설화만을 중심으로 이루어지고 있다. 하지만 가락국기의 저술 시기는 가야의 멸망으로부터도 오랜 시간이 지난 고려 중기로 이것만을 기반으로 가야 설화를 연구할 경우 그 사이에 일어난 가야 설화의 변이나 이설에 대해 설명할 수 없다. 결국 그러한 연구는 토대가 부실하게 될 뿐더러 위험한 것이다. 신라시대부터 고려시대에 이르는 가야 설화의 정립 과정을 바라볼 경우 가야 설화의 정립에 가장 큰 영향을 끼친 요소는 가야 당대의 역사적 사실이나 문화적 배경이 아니라 불교 세력이나 금관가야계 집단 등 이후 가야 설화를 전승하던 계층의 정치적, 종교적 목적에 따른 외삽이라는 점을 확인할 수 있다. 이런 외삽이 실제 가야 설화 이상으로 당대에 받아들여진 원인은 첫째로 가야의 멸망 이후 가야계 집단이 불교와 연계하면서 정치, 문화, 종교를 통해 지방 사회를 선도해갈 수 있게 되었고, 둘째로는 고려 중기 이후 고려의 지식인들은 설화를 통해, 한반도의 독자성을 살리고 중국과 대등한 신이성을 획득하여 원나라 주도의 세계 질서에 대처하려 하였다는 사실을 들 수 있다. 이를 통해 가야 설화는 오래 전 멸망한 소국의 설화가 아닌 당대인의 열망이 반영된 살아있는 설화가 되어 현재에까지 그 영향을 미칠 수 있게 되었다.; The previous studies on the Gaya tales focused on the Gaya tales introduced in the Book of Garakguk of Samgukyusa. The Book of Garakguk was written in middle Goryeo long after Gaya collapsed, which means any research on the Gaya tales based on the book cannot explain about the changes and different views of the Gaya tales that happened during the interval. An examination of the establishment process of the Gaya tales from Shilla to Goryeo confirms that the biggest influential element was not the historical facts or cultural backgrounds of the times but the extrapolations of the classes that passed down the Gaya tales including the Buddhists and the groups of Geumgwan Gaya according to their political and religious purports. Their extrapolations were accepted as much as the actual Gaya tales or more than them by the contemporary people for the following reasons: first, after the collapse of Gaya, the groups associated with it formed connections with Buddhism and were able to lead the community through politics, culture and religion. And secondly, the intellectuals of Goryeo tried to react to the Yuan Dynasty-based world order by highlighting the independence of the Korean Peninsula and bestowing the equal mystery and novelty upon Goryeo to China since the middle Goryeo Dynasty. Thus the Gaya tales continue to affect the present days as living tales where the aspirations of the contemporary people are reflected rather than as the tales of a small kingdom that ceased to exist a long time ago.
