사회적 통합과 자살

Abstract

이 논문은 사회적 통합이 평소에 비해 강해질 것으로 생각되는 특정 연휴기간에 자살자수의 양상이 어떻게 변화하는가를 파악하는데 그 목적이 있다. 이를 위해 한국의 대표적인 연휴로 여겨지는 신정, 구정, 추석, 성탄절 등을 연구의 대상이 되는 연휴로 설정하였다. 뒤르껭의 사회적 통합, Etzioni의 공공연휴 이론, 일상생활이론 등에 대한 논의를 바탕으로 연휴기간의 자살자수 증감을 설명해 보고자 시도하였다. 이론적 배경과 기존 연구결과를 토대로 연휴 이전 3일과 연휴 당일에는 자살자수의 감소가, 연휴 이후 3일에는 자살자수의 증가가 나타날 것이라는 기본가설을 설정하였다. 세부적으로 혼인상태별, 연령별 자살양상의 차이를 가정하였다. 분석을 위해 통계청에서 제공하는 2000-2005년 사망원인통계 자료를 가공하여 혼인상태, 연령대별 일일 자살자수를 활용하였다. 연휴기간 자살자수의 증감을 확인하기 위해 우선 기간별 평균 자살자수와 계절평균을 비교하였다. 이후 양상을 보다 명확히 파악하기 위해 계절별 평균자살자수와 기간별 평균 자살자수의 차이를 그래프로 확인하였다. 마지막으로 자살양상에 영향을 미치는 계절, 요일, 연도효과 등을 통제하고 통계적 의미를 부여하기 위해 회귀분석을 실시하였다. 핵심적인 분석결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 연휴기간의 자살자수 감소는 유의미한 것으로 확인되었다. 둘째, 혼인상태에 따른 자살양상의 차이는 발견되지 않는다. 셋째, 고령자 집단에서 연휴기간의 자살자수 감소양상이 명확히 나타난다. 단, 성탄절에는 젊은 연령대의 자살자수 감소가, 높은 연령대의 자살자수 증가가 나타난다. 넷째, 성탄절 이후의 자살자수 감소는 혼인상태 및 연령과 관계없이 나타난다. 다섯째, 기본가설에서 설정한 자살양상의 감소-감소-증가 형태는 규칙적으로 확인되지 않는다. 이러한 결과는 연휴에 강조되는 가족적 가치가 한 개인의 극단적인 선택을 막을 수 있는 기재가 될 수 있음을 말해준다. 혼인상태에 따라 자살양상의 차이가 나타나지 않는 것은 개인에게 영향을 미치는 가족 영향력의 범위가 그만큼 넓고 강하다는 의미로 해석된다. 연령 간 상이한 자살자수 감소의 차이는 시간이 지날수록 연휴가 가지고 있는 가족적 가치가 점차 사라지고 있음을 반증하는 것으로 해석된다. 따라서 이 논문의 결과는 가족적 가치와 의미의 회복이 자살이라는 개인의 극단적인 선택을 방지함에 있어서 핵심적인 요인으로 작용할 수 있음을 명확히 보여주고 있다.; The main purpose of this study is to examine the suicide pattern during major holidays which are considered to be in high social integration - New Year’s Day, Lunar New Year’s Day, Harvest Festival (Chuseok) and Christmas. In light of Durkheim's concept of social integration, Etzioni’s theory of public ritual and routine activity theory, this study examined and interpreted variation in the number of suicides during four major holidays. To confirm suicide patterns, this study hypothesized firstly, the number of suicides would decrease before and on each holiday, and secondly, the number of suicides would increase after each holiday. In detail, this study postulated different patterns by marital status and age groups. Utilizing “Causes of Death Statistics” from 2000 to 2005, the number of suicides by marital status and age group on each day is calculated and categorized by holiday. To identify the changes in the number of suicides, this study presented a comparison of the average number of suicides around holidays with the average number of suicides in each season. Differences were then shown in graphs to show suicide patterns explicitly. Finally, to control the effect of day, season and year, regression analysis using dummy variables was used. There are four major findings. First, the decrease in the number of suicides during holiday periods is significant. Second, different suicide patterns by marital status are not found. Third, the difference in suicide patterns by age groups is significant. Specifically, there is a decrease in the number of suicides of the old during Lunar New Year’s Day and Harvest Festival (Chuseok). On the other hand, there is no changes in the number of suicides of the young during the same periods. Fourth, a decrease in the number of suicides regardless of marital status and age is found at the end of a year. Fifth, an increase in the number of suicides after each holiday is not significant. These results mean that family values, which are specially emphasized during major holidays in Korea, can function as a “suicide immune system.” No difference of suicide patterns by marital status is considered to mean that the effect of family is large enough to prevent suicide of all people regardless of marital status. However, different suicide patterns by age groups are interpreted to mean that fundamental family values are becoming weaker as the generations progress.
