Abstract
In this thesis, a novel compact internal ultra-wideband (UWB) antenna for wireless universal serial bus (USB) dongle application is proposed. For better understanding of UWB antenna, brief discussion on UWB in wireless communication systems has been reviewed. And then, various wideband antennas are investigated. After that, a novel compact internal UWB antenna for wireless USB dongle application is designed and its performance is analyzed. New paragraph the proposed antenna has a simple configuration and is very easy to implement by bending a simple metal plate. The overall dimensions of a radiating element all made of copper plate is 18 mm -e 10 mm -e 6 mm. The design of the antenna is optimized by the commercial electromagnetic software, high frequency structure simulator (HFSS) based on finite element method (FEM). To widen the impedance bandwidth, the proposed antenna has a vertical patch with a bevel structure and a horizontal patch with a narrow slit. The proposed antenna satisfies the 10 dB return loss requirement over the frequency band of 2.9-V10.85 GHz (7.95 GHz), which easily covers the UWB band of 3.1-V10.6 GHz. Effects of the system ground plane on the impedance matching of antenna are studied experimentally. Detailed design of the proposed antenna is described and experimental results including radiation patterns and peak gains are presented.
