최인훈의 「구운몽」 연구

Abstract

We can see inside intrinsic nature of human and a writer's unique recognition on era, society and history through literature. Choi In-hun's literature showed peculiarities of subjects struggling with the world, and intensively described process positioned as valuable spirit of the present age through them. Especially Guwonmong described a hero's mentality not seeking self-identity and wandering in political confusion such as the war 6·25 and the revolution 4·19. Also this work is a the most important work of Choi In-hun's unique style which novels, as experimental novels, include a stream of consciousness method and exclude story and conventions. Guwonmong is a work which the writer described a hero(Dok Go-min)'s ideology, confusion of his values and destitution of life in South Korea. It expressed them in a fantastic structure of time and space. Choi In-hun showed breaking rules against traditional realism through dream and fantasy in Guwonmong. His fantasy methods extended time and space and it was possible to handle consciousness of inside. In this work, time and space are not modern concept of them based on the law of causality but experienced them formed characters' mental world. A search on mental world did the writer down as an intellectual escaping from reality. However obvious truth in his work Guwonmong was that he tried critical consciousness on absurd reality or transplanted western culture accepted uncritically through ideality as a writer's literary introspection. The aim of this paper is to reveal fantasy in Choi In-hun's Guwonmong and what aspect it reveal. Therefore I researched how his novel included form and contents through dividing the works time structure and space structure. In chapter two, I analyzed time structure. I divide layers of description into introducing forms of dream to include a stream of consciousness and to classify era. Also I revealed overcoming an existing causal idea of time using a plot of modernism novel. In chapter three, I researched the work focused on a space structure. First of all, I revealed meaning of a secret room and a square as a special space often displayed in his novel, and then the fantasy world of Dok Go-min was similar with mystery structure through analyzing space of a secret room and a square in Guwonmong. However space of mystery adding an image of modern maze acted as changed space. The changed space had meaning of process to seek ego and mature. Also space of mystery including transcendence exposed a hero's unconsciousness effectively. Change and transcendence of time and space brought the fantasy in Guwonmong. However this fantasy acted as not original meaning of fantasy but a new and estrange method. In other words, the fantasy in Guwonmong was a method to expound thought and ideality based on reality with Choi In-hun's logic. Of course to comment on overall Choi In-hun's literature world with only a work, Guwonmong, has a limit. But to research the most abstruse novel of his works will arrange a foundation which can understand similar works such as Seoyugi and The Research of Mask. Also his experimental literature that had conquer will and introspective thought of an intellectual living fierce life led a new literary style. It had a meaning on the history of literature.; 우리는 문학을 통해서 인간의 내면적 본질을 엿볼 수 있고, 또한 시대와 사회 그리고 역사를 바라보는 작가의 독자적인 인식을 만날 수 있다. 최인훈의 문학은 세계와 싸우는 인식 주체의 개별성을 보여주고, 그것을 통해 우리 시대의 유효한 정신으로 자리 잡아 가는 과정을 치열하게 묘사하고자 노력하였다. 특히 그의 작품 「구운몽」은 전쟁과 분단, 4 · 19 혁명이라는 정치적 혼란 속에서 자아정체성을 찾지 못하고 방황하는 이의 심리묘사를 잘 그려내고 있는 작품이다. 또한 이 작품은 의식의 흐름기법과 스토리, 풍속을 배제한 식의 실험적 소설로서 그의 독특한 문학적 작업방식을 대표하고 있다. 「구운몽」은 주인공 독고민이 남한사회에서 겪는 삶의 궁핍함과 가치관의 혼란, 이데올로기 등을 환상적 시 · 공간의 구조로 표현한 작품이다. 최인훈은 「구운몽」에서 꿈과 환상의 영역을 통해 기존의 전통적 리얼리즘에 반기를 드는 파격성을 선보인다. 그가 도입한 환상기법은 시간과 공간의 무한대적 확대를 가져왔는데 그것은 내면의 의식을 다룸으로서 가능했다. 즉 이 작품에서의 시간과 공간은 인과율에 토대를 둔 근대적 개념의 시 · 공간이 아닌 경험된 시 · 공간, 체험된 시 · 공간으로 제시되어 인물의 내면세계를 형상화하고 있다. 내면세계의 탐구는 그를 현실 도피주의 지식인으로 폄하시키기도 했다. 하지만 그의 작품 「구운몽」에 드러나는 분명한 사실은 당대의 부조리한 현실 또는 무비판적으로 수용되어온 서구이식문화에 대한 비판의식을 작가의 문학적 성찰이라는 관념성을 통해 시도하고 있다는 것이다. 본 연구의 목적은 최인훈의 「구운몽」에 드러나는 환상성이 어떤 차원에서 드러나는지 밝히기 위함이었다. 따라서 작품을 시간과 공간구조로 나누어 분석함으로서 그의 소설이 형식과 내용을 어떻게 담고 있는지 살펴보았다. Ⅱ장에서는 시간구조를 분석해보았다. 이 장을 통해 의식의 흐름을 담아내기 위해 꿈의 형식을 도입한 것과 시대를 구분하기 위한 방편으로 서술의 층위를 구분하였음을 밝혔다. 또한 모더니즘 소설의 플롯을 사용하여 기존의 인과율적 시간관에서 벗어남을 확인하였다. Ⅲ장에서는 공간구조를 중심으로 분석해보았다. 먼저 그의 소설에 자주 등장했던 특정한 공간으로서 ‘밀실’과 ‘광장’의 의미를 밝혔으며 「구운몽」에 드러나는 밀실과 광장의 공간을 분석함으로서 독고민의 환상세계가 미궁구조와 흡사함을 알 수 있었다. 그러나 미궁의 공간이 현대의 미로의 이미지와 더해져 변형적 공간으로서 작용하고 있으며 변형된 미궁 공간은 자아를 찾고 성숙해 나가기 위한 절차의 의미를 지니고 있음을 확인할 수 있었다. 또한 미궁 공간은 초월성을 띠고 있음으로서 주인공의 무의식을 효과적으로 잘 나타내고 있었다. 시간과 공간의 변형과 초월은 「구운몽」의 환상성을 가져왔다. 그러나 이 환상은 판타지의 의미가 아닌 새롭고 낯설게 하기 위한 방편으로 작용한다. 다시 말해서「구운몽」에 드러난 환상은 현실에 바탕을 둔 사고와 관념을 최인훈 자신의 논리로 풀어내기 위한 하나의 방편인 것이다. 물론 「구운몽」이라는 한 작품에 천착하여 최인훈의 문학세계 전반을 논의 한다는 것은 한계가 있다. 그러나 그의 작품 중 가장 난해한 작품으로 손꼽히는 「구운몽」을 연구함으로서 「서유기」와 「가면고」 등과 같은 일직선상의 다른 작품들을 이해하는 초석을 마련했다는데 그 의미를 둔다. 또한 치열한 삶을 살았던 지식인의 반성적 사고와 초극의지로서의 그의 실험적 문학이 또 하나의 새로운 문학양식을 선도했다는 데에 문학사적인 의미가 있다고 보아진다.
