세일즈맨의 희생제의

Abstract

본 논문은 아서 밀러(Arthur Miller)의 『세일즈맨의 죽음』(Death of a Salesman)에서 주인공 윌리 로만(Willy Loman)의 죽음에 투영된 희생제의 메커니즘을 분석하는 데 목적이 있다. 희생제의 메커니즘은 고대부터 내려오는 제의로써 국가나 사회에 위기가 닥쳐왔을 때 이를 극복하기 위해 희생양을 선택하여 신에게 바침으로써 질서회복을 찾고자 하는 데 목적이 있었다. 이러한 맥락으로 밀러의『세일즈맨의 죽음』을 살펴보았을 때 사회가 그들의 체제를 유지하기 위해 만들어 놓은 성공신화 이념을 맹목적으로 쫓아다닌 한 세일즈맨이 자신뿐만 아니라 가족에게까지 그 가치관을 강요하게 함으로써 몰고 오게 될 위기를 읽을 수 있을 뿐만 아니라 그에게서 그 위기를 책임져야만 하는 희생양의 징후를 살펴볼 수 있다. 『세일즈맨의 죽음』에서 기계문명이 발달한 산업사회를 배경으로 세일즈맨 윌리가 아메리칸 드림을 꿈꾸었지만 사회에서 소외되고 그의 도덕적 타락으로 가족에게까지 소외되면서 정신적 혼란을 겪게 된다. 밀러는 윌리의 정신세계를 과거와 현재라는 시공간으로 자유롭게 넘나들도록 설정하여 과거의 화려한 성공신화를 재현하여 현재의 불행한 삶의 원인을 무대에 펼쳐 보인다. 또한 시·청각적 장치인 음악, 조명, 색깔 그리고 소품 등의 비언어적인 요소를 이용하여 윌리의 의식 속에 잠재워 있던 성공에 대한 욕망과 현재의 불안한 심리를 병치구조 형식으로 설정하여 관객에게 그가 제의의 희생양으로서 선택된 과정을 효과적으로 전달한다. 사회극 극작가로 평가받는 밀러의『세일즈맨의 죽음』을 통해 과거와 현재라는 병치 구조로 무대를 설정하여 도덕적으로 타락한 한 개인의 역사를 추적함으로써 질서의 위기를 가져온 희생양을 찾아 위기를 극복하려는 제의의식이라는 새로운 시각으로 작품을 분석해 보는데 의의를 두며 넓게는 개인에게 비윤리적인 이념을 심어준 아메리칸 드림이라는 사회적 이념을 ‘윌리’라는 상징적 인물로 설정하여 사회와의 상호 관계성의 문제를 분석하였다.; This study aims at examining the scapegoat mechanism as projected onto the death of Willy Loman in Arthur Miller's Death of a Salesman. The scapegoat mechanism is a ritual the origin of which can be traced back to ancient civilizations. It functions to restore order when a crisis threatens the integrity of a nation or society. Members of a society in crisis choose a scapegoat to overcome this crisis by placating the divine power. This study attempts to see Death of a Salesman in the context in which the scapegoat mechanism is played out. The salesman who upholds the myth of American success and forces into his family is the very cause of the family crisis. At the same time, symptoms of self-scapegoating become increasingly manifest in him, ultimately leading to his death. In Death of a Salesman, Willy is a common man who is obsessed with an illusion for success. Unfortunately he is neglected from society and his family, because he lacks self-recognition and the standard of moral values. At the same time he has a mental dilemma which oscillates between past and present. Miller makes a stage for Willy to overpass between past and present. In Willy's mind, the past and the present are precariously juxtaposed to the effect that his sense of self becomes gradually but surely disintegrated. The playwright also wants the myth of success to be embodied in Willy's past so that his failure in the present can be magnified. In addition, Miller underpins the tragic power of the play through the wonderfully multivalent mise-en-scene, through music, lighting, gesture and color. These elements work effectively to send a powerful message of the sacrifice ritual to the audience.
