Abstract

기존의 예이츠 (W. B. Yeats)에 관한 연구에서는 주로, 그의 초기 시를 중심으로 몽상적 세계와 신비주의, 초자연적 소재들이 지닌 상징성을 다루었다. 그리고 후기 시에서는 우주의 대립적 속성들에 대한 그의 인식, 비극적 유희, 통일과 화합, 가이어 이론들에 대해 연구를 해왔다. 초기 시에서 후기 시에 이르기까지 예이츠의 사상 변화는 그가 평생에 걸쳐 현실적 자아 완성을 끊임없이 노력한 시인임을 말해 준다. 초기 시에 있어 예이츠는 초자연적 경험을 통해 시적 진실을 도출해 내고, 요정과 같은 초자연적 소재와, 이상적 세계는 그가 표현하고자 했던 다양한 주제와 소재들을 유기적으로 융합해 주는 것들이었다. 본고에서는 그의 초기 시에 있어, 요정과 같은 초자연적 소재가 그의 현실도피 및 이상세계의 추구 의지를 어떻게 반영하고 있는 지를 살펴 볼 것이다. 한편 중기 이후의 시에서는, 예이츠의 현대문명에 대한 인식 및 비판의 정신을 통해 그가 시인으로서 책임의식을 이상과 현실의 통일과 화합의 추구로 보여주고 있다. 중기 이후의 시에서 그는 현대문명에서 소재를 취하여, 본격적으로 침착하고 냉정하게 현실문명을 반영하기 시작한다. 그는 후기 시로 가면서 내적 자아의 성장을 겪으면서 한때 도피의 대상이었던 현실 세계를 수용하게 되며, 그것이 때로는 재창조의 대상이 될 수 있음을 인식하게 된다. 초기부터 후기 작품에 이르기까지 그의 변함없는 개념은, 인간의 정신적 완성이 자연적 인간 욕구의 포기 및 본능의 추구와 물질적 탐욕에 대한 포기를 전제로 하나, 이 같은 체계에서 상반된 가치들 중 어느 하나만을 궁극적 가치의 영역으로 받아들이지 않음으로써 화해와 조화의 메시지를 전달한다는 것이다.; There are a number of studies on Yeats's poetry. His early poetry is mainly about an idealistic world and he uses symbols to express it. His later poetry is concerned about the theory of gyre, supernaturalism, tragic beauty and the Unity of Being. This thesis focuses on supernatural existence of fairies in Yeats's early poems. While his middle and later poems express his criticism on the modern civilization, Yeats, in his early and later poems, pursues a supernatural power to unite two different worlds of art and reality as one. Yeats is in pursuit of an imaginative world in his early poems. But he gradually comes back to reality and humanity in his later poems, and eventually he wants to unite for a new poetic truth two things such as the world and art, nature and man, truth and falseness, logic and mystery, and history and literature. This thesis is to study in his poetry how he overcomes and accepts the agonies and failures of reality, and his efforts to harmonize the two opposite worlds of the ideal and the real. Furthermore Yeats's pursuit reflects his idea of Unity of Being: the poet, his poetry, and his world.
