A STUDY OF ROBERT FROST'S POETRY OF CONTEMPLATION

Abstract

본 논문은 미국의 대표적 시인인 로버트 프로스트 (Robert Frost)의 명상 시에 대한 연구를 목적으로 한다. 프로스트는 전쟁과 가족의 죽음 등 많은 고통을 겪었다. 그러한 혼돈스런 시대와 삶의 모습들이 자리하는 그의 시속에는 세계와 인생과 인간에 대한 철학 적 사색으로 가득하다. 프로스트시의 중요한 배경이 되고 있는 뉴잉들랜드는 유럽인들이 가장 먼저 진출하여 나라를 건설하고 새로운 토양에서 그들의 독특한 예술적 뿌리를 내린 지역으로 역사적, 문화적 의미가 깊은 곳이다. 뉴잉글랜드의 자연은 로버트 프로스트를 비롯한 많은 작가들을 배출하였고, 그들은 적지 않은 시대의 변화를 함께 겪으며 그곳의 자연과 치열했던 삶을 표현했다. 프로스트는 인생의 대부분을 도시를 떠나 자연 속에서 살았고 대부분의 그의 시는 그 자연을 배경하기 때문에 그를 흔히 자연시인이라고 생각해 왔다. 그러나 그의 시가 자연을 대하는 태도는 윌리엄 워즈워스(William Wordsworth) 를 비롯한 대표적 자연주의 시인들과는 다르다. 자연을 다루고 있는 그의 많은 시에서 자연은 인간에게 그리 호의적이지 않으며 때로는 위협적이기도 하다. 따 라서 시인은 자연과 동화되는 일이 드물다. 또한 프로스트는 쉬운 회화체의 시어를 사용하기 때문에 그의 시는 이해 하기 쉽다고 생각되어진다. 그러나 잦은 은유나 제유 등의 사용은 시의 의미를 모호하게 한다. 이러한 프로스트 시의 특징들은 일반 독자들에게 잘못 이해되기 도 했다. 즉 독자들은 일반적으로 프로스트 시의 특징을 이해하기 쉬운 자연시라 고 생각했다. 본 논문은 이러한 독자들의 편견을 재조명 하고 그의 시 속에 나타난 자 연관, 세계관, 인생관을 심도 있게 분석하여 프로스트 시에 대한 독자들의 이해를 높이고자 한다. 본 논문의 1장에서는 “Storm Fear,” “Lodged,” “Out, Out-,” “The Road Not Taken” 등 자연을 배경으로 하는 시를 통하여 주로 자연과 인간의 관 계를 분석한다. 농부로서 살아온 프로스트에게 자연은 노동과 삶의 생생한 현장 이다. 또한 일부 시에서 자연은 단지 인간의 갈등을 묘사하기 위한 배경으로만 존재한다. 2장에서는 “Fire and Ice,” “Out, Out-,” “Desert Places”등 사회적 문제를 반영한 시를 분석한다. 양차 세계대전과 경제공황 등 시대적 혼란을 겪은 프로스트는 그의 시에서 전쟁의 공포, 인간의 고립, 산업화에 따른 문제들을 반영 하고 있다. 3장에서는 시인 자신의 비극적 개인사와 그것이 시에 미친 영향을 “Home Burial,” “The Death of the Hired Man” 등의 작품을 통해 살펴본다. 개인적 비극을 유난히 많이 겪었던 그가 쓴 시는 전반적으로 어두우며, 인간의 갈등과 신에 대한 냉소적 태도를 보여주고 있다. 마지막으로 4장에서는 시인이 세상을 살아가는 긍정적 자세와 인생관을 그의 시를 통해 분석하고자 한다. 또한 시에 나타난 프로스트의 이원론적인 사 상을 살펴보고자 한다. 프로스트는 자신이 스스로 말했듯이 낙관주의와 비관주의 중 어느 편에도 서 있지 않다. 이러한 그의 이원론적 사고는 이 세상을 현실 그 대로 인정하고 받아들이게 하는 정신적 원천이 된다. “Birches,” “Come In” 등 그의 시 속에서 인간은 삶의 무게에 지칠 때 잠시 이 세상을 떠나 있고 싶은 죽 음의 욕망을 느끼곤 하지만, 결국 현실을 받아들이는 긍정적 태도와 지혜를 보여 준다.; The objective of my thesis is to study Robert Frost’s poetry of contemplation. As one of America’s representative poets of the twentieth century, Frost sketches the age’s confusion. His philosophical thoughts on the world, life, and man pervade his poems. Robert Frost lived in New England and dealt with its nature in many of his poems, and is considered a nature poet. However, his way of treating nature is different from other nature poets’, including Wordsworth who admired nature and was inspired by it. In many of Frost’s poems nature is not friendly to man and it is sometimes even a threat to man. Moreover, nature itself is not his main subject, existing just as a background or a figure to make man feel lonely. Frost’s poetry seems easy to understand because of seemingly simple diction. However, with poetic devices such as metaphor and synecdoche, his poetry is often ambiguous. I think that Frost’s poems have been misunderstood by general readers as if he treated nature itself with simple and easy poetic meanings. For this reason, this thesis aims to rectify the biased views about Frost, hoping to enhance readers’ understanding of his poetry. Chapter I analyzes the nature poems. In the poems such as “Storm Fear” and “Lodged,” nature is frightening and indifferent to man. In some poems, including “The Road Not Taken” and “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening,” nature just serves as a background, from which the poet contemplates the nature of life. Chapter II examines Frost’s poems reflecting social problems. In his poems such as “Fire and Ice,” “The Bonfire,” and “Once by the Pacific,” Frost describes the crisis of the times. “The Death of Hired Man” and “Desert Places” reveal man’s alienation. Chapter III investigates Frost’s personal tragedies that influenced significantly his poetry and his view of life. “Home Burial” and “Out, Out-” reflect Frost’s loss of his children. Some poems, including “Stars” and “Forgive O Lord, My Little Jokes on Thee” show Frost’s view on God, which might be relevant considerably to his personal tragedies. Chapter IV deals with the poems that show Frost’s positive attitude toward life. Despite life’s dark sides, the poet keeps his balance and does not give up life. Frost’s well-balanced sense of life is based on his dualistic thought. Between death and life, Frost is resolute for survival. Frost’s poetry contemplates life and man. His poems express his deep philosophy and understandings of life and tell us how to cope with the troubles we face on life’s journey.
