A STUDY OF FEMALE IMAGERY IN W. B. YEATS'S POETRY

Abstract

본 논문은 예이츠의 시에 나타난 여성의 이미저리의 연구를 목적으로 한다. 예이츠의 삶과 문학에서 여성은 중요한 부분을 차지했다. 그의 시에 나타난 여성의 이미저리는 그의 여성관을 내포하고 있다고 볼 수 있다. 예이츠는 여성의 권리를 찾고자 노력했던 페미니스트들의 친구이자 후원자였다. 하지만 그의 시에 나타난 여성은 "집안에 있는 천사"로 그의 행동과 모순을 이루고 있다. 예이츠의 삶과 문학에 큰 영향을 끼쳤던 여성들은 모드 곤, 올리비아 셰익스피어, 그레고리 부인 그리고 조지 하이드-리즈로 요약해 볼 수 있다. 제 1 장에서는 예이츠가 평생 사랑했던 여인인 모드 곤과 예이츠의 관계와 모드 곤을 향한 그의 태도를 분석한다. "The Rose of the World"와 "A Prayer for My Daughter"에 나타난 예이츠의 상반된 태도는 그가 모드 곤을 사랑 했지만 전통적인 관습과 문화에 어울리지 않는 모드 곤의 생각을 혐오했다는 젓을 알 수 있다. 제 2 장에서는 젊은 시절 예이츠의 애인이었고 그 이후 친구 관계를 유지해 왔던 올리비아 셰익스피어와 예이츠와의 관계를 "He Bids his Beloved be at Peace,""The Travail Passion,""A Poet to his Beloved.""The Lover Mourns For the Loss of Love," 그리고 "After Long Silence"에서 분석해 본다. 예이츠는 그녀를 욕망의 대상이자 안식처로 여기며 그녀와 함께 후식을 갈망하는 모습을 보여준다. 제 3 장에서는 예이츠에게 "엄마, 친구, 누나 그리고 형"의 역할을 해주었던 그레고리 부인과 예이츠의 관졔를 분석해 본다. 그녀는 예이츠가 문학작품에 전념할 수 있도록 쿨 장원을 제공해주었으며 정신적인 면뿐만 아니라 경제적인 면에서도 큰 후원자의 역할을 하였다. "Coole Park, 1929" 그리고 "Coole Park and Ballylee, 1931"에서 예이츠는 그레고리 부인을 "평화의 중심"으로 생각하며 전통적인 여성의 모습으로 인식하고 있는 태도를 보인다. 제 4 장에서는 예이츠늬 "완벽한 부인"인 조지 하이드-리즈와 예이츠와의 관계를 살펴본다. 예이츠와 그녀의 결혼은 그의 문학과 안생관에 큰 영향을끼쳤다. "Solimon to Sheba"와 "Solomon and the Witch"는 예이츠가 그녀와의 결혼으로 인해 한 번도 느껴보지 못했던 행복을 처음으로 맛보았으며 평생 예이츠를 함들게 했던 불안에서 벗어나게 해주고 있음을 보여준다. 젊은 시절 예이츠는 평범하지 않은 자유롭고 야성적인 여성에게 끌렸다. 하지만 예이츠가 살았던 남성중심 가부장작인 이데올리기의 영향을 받아 그의 여성관은 변화하여 결국은 남성에게 헌신하고 희생하는 전통적인 여성들에게 의존하며 그들을 예이츠의 안락하고 편안한 삶을 위한 수단으로 여긴다.; The objective of this thesis is to examine the female imagery in the poetry of W. B. Yeats. Women played key parts in Yeats's life. The female imagery in his poetry contains his ideas of women. While Yeats's ideas of women seem to have been "lawless women without homes and children" with "all manner of wild places," he considers women "angels in the house." Chapter Ⅰ investigates his relationship with Maud Gonne and his attitudes toward her in "The Rose of the World" and "A Prayer for My Daughter." Yeats's earlier poem, "The Rose of the World" shows that Yeats apotheosizes Maud Gonne, his beloved. "A Prayer for My Daughter," however, shows that Yeats loved her but hated her thoughts. Chapter Ⅱ deals with Olivia Shakespear, his mistress in the late 1890s, relationships between Yeats and Olivia Shakespear and his desires for women in "He Bids his Beloved be at Peace," "The Travail Passion," "A Poet to his Beloved," "The Lover Mourns For the Loss of Love," and "After Long Silence." Yeats considers her a shelter and longs for rest with her in these poems. Chapter Ⅲ treats Lady Gregory who was Yeats's "mother, friend, sister and brother," and Yeats's relationship with Lady Gregory in "Coole Park, 1929" and "Coole Park and Ballylee, 1931." Yeats regards her as "a friend and hostess, a centre of peace," and sees her as a motherly figure. Chapter Ⅳ analyzes George Hyde-Lees, Mrs Yeats and female imagery in "Solomon to Sheba" and "Solomon and the Witch." The poems show the relaxation of tension brought by Yeats's marriage and his pleasure in George Yeats's role as a housewife and the theme of love. This study shows that Yeats is a man of conservative thoughts about women who lived in a society where patriarchal and hierarchial relationships prevailed.
