동적정보의 시각화에 관한 연구

Abstract

엘빈토플러는 그의 저서 ‘제3의 물결’에서 다가오는 정보화시대를 소개하고, 정보화시대의 다양한 잠재적 가능성을 조명하였다. 정보화시대는 정보를 효과적으로 생산, 수집, 가공, 전달, 배포하는 기술이 매우 중요하다. 1983년 에드워드 터프트로부터 관심을 모으기 시작한 정보디자인의 연구는 현재에는 커뮤니케이션의 효율성 증대를 도울 수 있는 중요한 방법론으로 활발히 연구되고 있다. 정보디자인이란 넓은 의미에서 정보를 선택하고 새로운 형태로 조직해서 특정의 사용자에게 제시하는 것을 뜻한다. 정보디자인은 정보의 효과적 가공기술로서 사용자가 생소한 프로세스를 만났을 때에도 어려움 없이 그 내용을 쉽게 파악할 수 있도록 돕는다. 정보디자인은 효과적인 시각적 모델을 제시하거나 당면된 문제를 해결할 수 있는 정확한 가이드라인을 제시함으로서 사용자가 최적의 커뮤니케이션을 경험 할 수 있도록 한다. 과거로부터 정보디자인은 다양한 영역에서 적용되어왔다. 하지만 대부분 고정된 정보를 다루는 디자인이었다. 그러나 오늘날의 정보는 고정된 형태로 머물러 있기보다는 계속 변화하는 동적정보의 형태를 가지고 있는 것이 대부분이다. 동적정보란 시간의 흐름에 따라 계속적으로 변화하는 정보를 말하는데, 이와 같은 동적정보는 유기체와 같은 특성을 지니고 있어서 시스템 내 혹은 시스템과 사용자 사이의 커뮤니케이션 과정에서 계속 변화하고 진화한다. 그렇다면 이와 같은 “동적정보를 어떻게 시각화해야하는가?” 본 논문은 위 물음에서 출발했다. 동적정보의 시각화는 고정된 정보의 시각화 방법론으로는 해결되지 않는 많은 차이점을 가지고 있다. 물론 어느 정도는 유사한 점도 있지만 실제로 유사점과 상이점의 복합된 형태라고 말하는 것이 더 정확할 것이다. 그렇다면 유사한 점을 가지고 있으면서도 많은 상이한 점을 가지는 동적정보를 가공할 수 있는 시각화 방법론을 찾아 그 시각화 방법론의 틀을 통해 이 논점을 해결하는 것이 어떠한가? 이 논문에서는 벤자민 J 프라이의 바렌스와 아네모네, 정보의 효과적인 시각화 방법론으로 에드워드 터프트의 연쇄점, 미시/거시적 읽기, 컬러와 정보를 활용한 방법론을 소개하고 분석한다. 선행된 방법론의 분석을 바탕으로 동적정보의 하나인 교통정보를 시각화하기위한 효과적인 방법론을 찾아본다. 결과적으로 필자는 기존 교통정보의 시각화 결과물을 개선한 VMS(Variable Massage Signs-도로전광표지), 웹(네비게이션)에서의 프로토타입을 각각 하나씩 제시함으로써 동적정보의 시각화를 위한 다양한 가능성을 조망해 보도록 한다. 본 연구자는 이후 또 다른 동적정보를 주제로 삼아 다양한 채널을 활용해, 효과적인 방법론 개발을 위한 목적으로 더 심층적인 연구를 진행할 것이다.; Alvin Toffler introduced information age in his book 'The Third Wave' and prospected the various potential possibility of information age. It is very important to produce, collect, process, transfer and distribute information effectively in the information age. The study of information design which was attracted by Edward R. Tufte in 1983 has been studied as the important methodology to help increase effectiveness of communication for the present. Information Design is chooses information and organizes information into new type and present it to unusual user in wide meaning. Information Design is the effective process technique of information. When users meet strange process, it help them to seize the contents easily without any difficulties. Information Design makes users to experience optimum communication as presenting a effective visual model and accurate guideline to solve the facing problem. It has been applied to various field. But most of them was a design to deal with static information. The information in today is more of active than static information. Dynamic information is information that change continuously according to flowing of time. The dynamic information has organic feature, so it evolves continually within system or between system and user for the process of communication. This treatise was started in question about "how to visualize dynamic information that change continuously?". The method of processing and visualizing this dynamic information has a big difference compare with the method of visualizing the static information in the past. Of course, there is some similarities to certain extent but it is more correct or call complex mix of similarities and differences. How about finding the visual method of processing that dynamic information and solving this issue within visual method? This thesis presents and analyze the valance, the anemone of Benjamin J. Fry's methodology and the small Multiples and Micro / Macro Readings of the Edward R. Tufte's methodology the method of using colors. I will find effective methodology to visualize one of the dynamic information, the traffic information in the foundation of previous analysis. Consequently, this researcher will expect various possibilities to visualize dynamic information by presenting prototypes of VMS(Variable Massage Signs) and web(navigation) to improvement visual consequences of existing traffic information one by one. This researcher will proceed more significant study to develop effective methodology through various channels as dealing with another active information after this.
