슈만의 Carnaval Op. 9 연구

Abstract

슈만(Robert Schumann, 1810~1856)은 주관적 감정표현과 형식의 자유로움을 추구한 낭만주의 작곡가이며 이러한 특징 안에서 문학과 음악을 연관시켜 많은 표제적인 음악을 작곡하였다. 그의 표제적인 특성은 피아노 작품에서 두드러지며 특히 성격적 소품(character piece)에서 가장 잘 표현되었다. 슈만의 성격 소품이 다른 낭만 작곡가와 구별되는 점은 작품이 가지고 있는 문학과의 연관성, 슈만 자신의 자전적인 성격 때문이라고 할 수 있다. 슈만의 Carnaval Op.9는 그의 대표적인 표제음악 작품들 중의 하나이며 20개의 소품들로 구성되어 있다. 카니발에 등장하고 있는 20개의 표제는 각각의 개성을 가지고 있으며 2곡 혹은 3곡 이상이 등장 인물과 분위기에 따라 서로 대조되거나 연관되어 있다. 이 작품에서 각 곡마다 붙여진 표제는 등장하는 인물이나 배경 등 슈만의 주관이나 철학, 사상과 연관되어 나타나고 있다. 음악적 기법에 있어서는 여러 소품들의 특징과 인물 묘사를 나타내기 위하여 서정적이면서도 변화가 많은 선율, 리듬의 교차, 당김음, 불규칙적인 액센트, 잦은 전조, 반음계적 화성 진행 등을 사용하였다. 본 논문에서는 슈만의 Carnaval Op.9의 표제에 관한 해석과 음악적 특징을 연구하였다. 서론에서는 낭만 시대의 특징과 함께 성격 소품이 발생하게 된 계기를 논하였다. 본론에서는 먼저 슈만의 생애를 통하여 그의 음악관을 알아보았으며 슈만의 피아노 음악의 특징에 관해 살펴보았다. 이어서 20개의 소품을 표제의 성격과 형식에 따라 다섯 부분으로 분류하여 연구하였다. 첫 번째는 카니발의 서막을 알리는 전주곡, 두 번째는 작품 안에서 대조성이 나타나는 곡들이며 세 번째는 춤곡 형태의 곡들이다. 네 번째는 카니발에 등장하는 슈만의 주변인물들이며 다섯 번째는 그 외의 곡들이다. 각 부분에 나타난 음악적인 특징들을 표제의 뜻과 더불어 형식, 리듬, 선율의 구성과 진행 과정, 지시어의 사용, 전조 과정 등을 통하여 알아보았다. 이러한 연구들을 통하여 슈만이 본인의 감정과 이상 등을 표현하는 데 있어 어떻게 음악을 전개했는지를 파악하여 그의 음악적인 특징을 이해하고자 한다. 나아가서는 실제 연주에 있어서 도움을 주고자 하는 것이 본 논문의 목적이다.; Robert Schumann (1810~1856) is one of the representative romantic composers of the 19th century, who has liberated his music from formal restraints and composed in the manner of a literary romanticist. Schumann's affinity for literature is also shown in the fact that many of his compositions bear literary titles. This tendency is markedly represented in his piano works, especially the "character pieces". What differentiates Schumann from other composers of the 'romantic movement'is that his music manifests his complex personality, life and historical background. Above all, Schumann's music exemplifies his artistic language and his deep interest in literature. Carnaval Op.9, probably the most well known work of Schumann, consists of 20 pieces with literary titles. These pieces are distinctive feature, and two or more than three pieces are presented contrast or connection based on a character or a background. The titles of each pieces are testaments of his philosophy, intimacy, sentimentality and subjectivity. Schumann experimented with various techniques such as rhythmic interruptions, irregular phrases, many lyrical melodic lines, cross rhythm etc., in order to express various characteristics of objects and to portray different characters. This thesis discusses musical characteristics of Carnaval Op.9 and its clear literary references. In the introduction, it discusses the characteristics of the Romantic Movement and the backgrounds of Schumann's character pieces. Further it discusses the life of Schumann and the main characteristics of his piano work. 20 pieces are classified five parts according to characteristics and form: (1) the prelude of Carnaval (2) two or three contrastive music styles in Carnaval (3) the piece of dance music (4) characters connected with Schumann and (5) the rest. In discussion, the musical features in reference to the literary titles, the form of music, rhythm, melody and progress, the use of directive, and the process of modulation, are presented. In sum, the present paper aims to obtain more information that can help performing as intended by the composer.
