J. Brahms의「Variations and Fugue on a theme by Handel, op.24」에 관한 분석

Abstract

19세기 낭만주의 시대의 작곡가 요하네스 브람스(Johannes Brahms ,1833-1897)는 “고전적 형식으로 낭만주의를 표현한 작곡가”라고 불리 운다. 그의 음악은 낭만적인 색채의 음악 어법 속에 고전주의 양식과 바로크적인 기법을 사용하여 절대 음악적 경향을 추구한 작곡가이다. 그는 오페라를 제외한 모든 분야에서 많은 작품을 남겼으며 또한 낭만주의 작곡가로서 자신의 조국 독일의 옛 민요 수집과 연구에도 힘쓰며 많은 양의 민요집을 출판하였다. 브람스의 음악은 낭만시대의 화려함과 우아함 그리고 화려한 기교와 함께 깊이 있는 내면을 서정적으로 노래하였으며 그의 고향 북독일의 거대한 항구 도시인 함부르크(Hamburg) 특유의 스산하고 쓸쓸한 기운을 느끼게 하는 음울함과 엄숙한 분위기도 나타난다. 양식적인 면에서는 초기 바로크 작곡가인 바흐(J.S.Bach,1685-1750), 헨델(G.F.Haä ndel,1685-1759), 베토벤(L.v.Beethoven,1770-1827)의 영향을 많이 받았으며 기존 형식 중에, 제한된 화성과 선율의 틀 안에서 다양한 분위기와 감정을 나타낼 수 있는 변주형식을 즐겨 사용했다. 브람스는 자신의 「소나타 C 장조」와 「f # 단조 2악장」에서 변주형식을 사용하였고, 「피아노 독주를 위한 5개의 변주곡」과 「4손을 위한 슈만 주제에 의한 변주곡과 푸가 작품 23(Variations on a theme by Schumann in E♭, Op.23)」및 「두 대의 피아노를 위한 하이든 주제에 의한 변주곡과 푸가 작품 56(Variations on a theme by Haydn, Op.56)」에서도 변주형식을 사용하고 있다. 브람스의 변주곡 중 「헨델 주제에 의한 변주곡과 푸가(Variations and Fugue on a theme by Handel, Op.24)」는 1861년에 헨델의 「Harpsichord Suite in B♭」를 바탕으로 작곡 되었으며 이 변주곡에서 브람스는 바로크적 형식과 기법 속에 낭만주의 음악어법이 마음과 정신, 자유와 억제를 통해 완벽하게 균형을 이루도록 잘 표현하고 있다. 또한 브람스만의 풍성한 음량과 폭넓은 음역, 다양한 음악적 색채감, 형식상의 견고함 등이 바로크 시대와 고전시대를 연상케 하는 작품임을 확인 할 수 있다. 뿐만 아니라 바로크시대를 대표하는 푸가를 결합하여 당시 그 누구도 시도하지 못한 새로운 음악을 탄생시켰다. 이와 같이 브람스는 자신만의 작곡기법을 사용하여 고전적이면서도 낭만적인 성격의 작품을 작곡하였다. 이 작품의 분석을 통해 전통에 기초하여 자신만의 새로운 음악어법을 확립시킨 브람스의 바로크적이면서도 낭만적인 그의 음악양식을 다시 한번 확인 할 수 있다.; Johannes Brahms(1833-1897), a romantic composer in 19th century, is called as 'the composer who expressed Romanticism through classical format'. He pursued absolute musical tendency by using classical format and baroque technique in romantic musical language. Brahms wrote various music except opera. As a romantic composer, he tried to collect and study folk songs of Germany, his fatherland, and published many folk song books. His music lyrically expressed brilliant and elegant atmosphere of romantic period, and presents profound inside with flowery techniques. Also, it delivered gloomy and grave atmosphere which shows bleak and lonely atmosphere of Hamburg, large port city and Brahms' hometown. In the aspect of format, he was influenced strongly by J.S.Bach,(1685-1750),G.F.Haä ndel(1685-1759), L.v.Beethoven(1770-1827). Among existing formats, he favored variation which can express various moods and emotions with limited harmony and melody. Brahms used variation format in his「Sonata in C major」,「No. 2 in f # minor」,「5 variations for Piano」,「Variations on a theme by Schumann in E♭, Op.23」, and 「Variations on a theme by Haydn, Op.56」. 「Variations and Fugue on a theme by Handel, Op.24」, one of his variation music, is composed in 1861 based on Handel's 「Harpsichord Suite in B♭」. In this music, Brahms expressed romantic musical language through baroque format with perfectly balanced mind, spirit, freedom, and restriction. Also, it reminds Baroque and Classical periods because of his unique characteristics such as abundant volume, wide range of sound, plentiful musical colors, and solid format. Furthermore, he can make brand new music by combining Fugue, representative music of Baroque period. In sum, Brahms composed classical music but also had romantic elements using his own techniques. By examining this music, we can reassure baroque and romantic music format of Brahms, who established novel musical language based on traditional format.
