In order to meet the electrical and mechanical functions required for the ceramic outdoor insulator, many technical constraints should be solved by the manufactures considering the pollution and the damages from the service environment. In this regard, the increase in leakage current and partial discharge occurrence are of importance to evaluate the performance of the insulator In this work, an improved novel method has been developed for the evaluation of the increase in the leakage current, for which fog chamber has been designed and fabricated where the pollution has been artificially produced at the laboratory for the relevant tests according to ESDD (equivalent salt deposit density) method recommended by IEC. Three different test specimen of insulator are put into under investigation; Normal, Polluted and Cracked one. The results on the two parameters under our concern have been analyzed. Considering our results, our method could be proposed for the future condition-based maintenance of the insulators under service on the high voltage overhead lines.-
