Abstract
This study aims at reviewing characteristics of training method for the 'practitioner' in the 'objective drama' suggested by Jerzy Grotowski. First, I am going to outline view of drama and experiments of Grotowski and purpose of his 'objective drama', and then, confirm concept and training method for practitioner of it. Grotowski's activity is divided to two periods, earlier and later one, based on 1969 when he began to perform drama which was not intended for spectators. Objective drama was his dramatic experiment in his later period when he made drama which didn't consider spectators as objects. In other words, it was his experiment reviewing dramatic factors in traditional culture including rituals, in order to lift barriers between practitioners and spectators, and to enable them encounter each other. Objective drama pertains to the background of Grotowski's thought and arts which had influenced on his view of drama. Since his childhood, he was influenced by Christian and Indian thoughts contained in the 'I-You' thought of Martin Buber who emphasized pure encounter, and 『A Search in Secret India』written by Paul Brunton which emphasize search for self. Especially, he accepted idea of 'objectiveness' as a concept of art from Osterwa and Guredjieff. So, theme and experiment Grotowski pursued in his objective drama were to looking for unique training method and performing technology in order to realize self-insight and objective reality. Such experiment was the course of acquiring technology on the stage totally revealing from instinct up to high-dimensional consciousness, focused on the organic relation between impetus and physical action. Those were realized in such forms as physical training in which internal changes of practitioner were brought into relief, experiments of diversified performing technologies utilizing traditional means of performance such as dances and songs, workshops and rehearsals. Namely, the training of practitioners was focused on the body of himself. Through the study on such training method of practitioner, I could confirm characteristics such as exposure of universal self, change of transparent consciousness, revival of passive behaviour, and active function cognizance of practitioner. Grotowski found the way modern drama should be directed in the factors of ancient art by closing examining performance traits of rituals with diverse training method and performance technologies. It was aimed expanding scope of drama more profoundly and widely by diverting ritual traits to the pattern of performance through skillful performance technologies. That is, he extracted performance traits of rituals and materialized them into technology on the stage. Conclusively, training method for practitioners Grotowski intended was an experiment of minute physical training of practitioners and skillful performance technologies in order to revive peculiar functions and possibilities of ancient arts.
