축제의 의미부여와 의미구조

국 문 요 지

본 연구는 안동국제탈춤페스티벌을 대상으로 축제를 둘러싼 이해관계자 집단인 중앙정부, 지방정부, 축제위원회, 지역상인, 지역언론, 지역NGO, 지역주민, 관광객 등 축제 이해집단 간 지역축제에 대해 어떤 의미를 부여하고 의미부여 내용에 따라 각 이해집단 간 어떤 의미구조 관계가 형성되어 있는 가에 대해 알아보았다. 우선적으로 지역축제에 관한 분석을 위해 언론기사를 기호학적으로 분석하여 의미부여 분석틀을 개발해 냈고, 또한 심층 인터뷰를 통하여 안동국제탈춤페스티벌의 이해집단 간 의미구조관계를 분석하였다. 특히, 그레마스가 제시한 행위소 모형을 기반으로 하여 의미구조 관계에서 조력자 겸 적대자, 발신방해자, 수신방해자가 추가 된 수정모형을 제시하고 수정모형에서도 기호학적 분석방법을 동원하여 사회적, 문화적, 경제적, 정치적, 여가관광적 등 각 의미별로 이해집단 간 의미구조관계를 규명하였다. 연구결과, 첫째, 언론기사 Text를 기호학적으로 분석한 결과는 전체적으로 대부분의 축제 이해집단들이 지역경제성을 강조하는 경제적 부분에 대한 의미부여가 많았으며, 특히, 주체자의 역할을 담당하는 지방정부, 축제위원회와 조력자로서의 지역상인과 수신자로서의 지역주민 등이 경제적 의미에 대해 대단히 긍정적인 의미를 부여하는 것으로 나타났다. 그 외 문화정치성을 나타내는 정치적 의미가 두 번째로 많은 의미를 부여하는 것으로 나타났는데, 정치적 의미는 지방자치단체에서 축제를 정치 수단화한다는 측면에서 부정적인 의미를 부여하는 것으로 분석되었다. 둘째, 안동국제탈춤페스티벌의 축제 이해집단을 대상으로 조사한 심층인터뷰 결과에서는 언론기사 Text 분석과 다른 결과가 나타났다. 즉, 안동국제탈춤페스티벌의 모든 이해집단들은 문화적 측면에 강한 긍정적인 의미를 부여하는 것으로 분석이 되었다. 이는 안동이라는 지역적 특수성과 안동국제탈춤페스티벌의 안동지역 고유문화를 소재로 한 지역문화기반 축제라는 축제 성격, 지역민들의 지역에 대한 자부심, 애착도 등이 지역 관련 이해집단들에게 안동국제탈춤페스티벌에 대해 강하고 긍정적인 문화적 의미를 부여하게끔 한 것으로 분석된다. 문화적 의미 외에 그 다음으로 여가관광적 의미, 경제적 의미, 정치적 의미, 사회적 의미 순으로 강한 의미를 부여하는 것으로 분석되었다. 안동국제탈춤페스티벌의 이해집단들 간의 의미부여 및 의미구조 관계를 종합하면, 축제의 주체인 지방정부와 축제위원회는 문화적 의미부여측면에서 조력자인 중앙정부, 지역상인들의 조력자적 역할에 힘입어 안동국제탈춤페스티벌에 한국문화대표성, 안동문화역량강화성 등에 강력한 의미를 부여하는 것으로 분석된다. 문화적 수신자로써 관광객과 지역주민은 지역언론 및 지역NGO의 문화적 발신자 역할을 통해 지역전통문화의 홍보, 지역문화의 변질성 등과 같은 긍정적 및 부정적인 문화적 의미를 전달 받게 되는 의미구조를 형성한다고 볼 수 있다. 본 연구의 의의로 학술적 차원에서는 본 연구를 토대로 축제 연구의 다양성을 추구할 수 있다는 점이다. 즉, 기존 양적연구 패러다임에서 추구해 온 축제의 경제적 파급효과, 축제의 산업성 등 경제학적 관점의 고착화 된 연구 패러다임에서 벗어나 축제의 사회적․ 문화적 본질적 가치, 정치적 차원에서의 축제 발전 방향, 전통문화로써 축제의 전승 등 사회학, 정치학, 문화인류학 등 다양한 연구관점에서 축제에 대한 연구가 수행되는 데 기초자료로 활용될 수 있을 것이다. 실용적 차원에서는 첫째, 축제의 본질적 요소인 문화적 요소와 사회적 요소 등을 중요한 평가의 잣대로 추가함으로써 축제 평가시스템의 기준을 다양화할 수 있으며, 둘째, 축제 이해집단 간 축제의 의미인식에 대한 차이를 규명함으로써 중앙정부의 축제 정책수립과 지방정부의 축제 전략수립에 있어 유용한 자료로 활용될 수 있다는 점에 의의가 있다고 할 수 있다.

This study examined the formation of the significance structure following contents of granting significance about local festival among stakeholders of Andong maskdance festival. These stakeholders include the central government, local governments, festival committee, local merchants, local press, local NGOs, local residents and tourists. First, a frame of analysis to interpret the granting significance was created by analyzing newspaper accounts using a semiology perspective. Second, the significance structure among stakeholders of Andong maskdance festival was examined through in-depth interview. A modified model of Greimas's actant model is presented. This modified model found out significance structure among stakeholders from like social, cultural, economic, political, and leisure-touristic dimensions etc. As a result of research, according to text analysis of newspaper accounts, most stakeholders granted very positive significance to the economic of the festival by emphasizing its regional economic character. The political significance was deemed second. The political significance was granted negatively to means of politics in local government. Secondly, the result of in-depth interview was different from text analysis of newspaper accounts. Namely, all stakeholders of the Andong maskdance festival granted very strong positive significance to the cultural significance. That was due to the regional particularity of Andong and the festival character as a regional cultural festival, pride in the region, and attachment. Apart from for cultural significance, leisure-touristic, economic, political, social significance were strongly granted significance in order. The significance structure of Andong maskdance festival show that the local government and festival committee play a role as the subject of the festival. Central government, local merchant play a role as helper for the local government and festival committee who granted strongly significance to the representative of Korean culture, strengthening ability of Andong culture. Tourists, Local residents as cultural receiver through a role of cultural sender of local press, local NGO on Andong festival formed significance structure which is conveying positive or negative cultural significance like publicity of local traditional culture, transformation of local culture. The contribution of this study is to see festivals from a multi-disciplinary perspective including sociology, political science, cultural anthropology. In the practical dimension, firstly, the valuation basis of festival will be diverse through addition of the important valuation basis such as cultural element and social elements. Second, insights gained from understanding differences in the significance recognition of festival stakeholders may help determine central governmental festival policymaking and local governmental festival strategy.
