연어 중심의 어휘 학습이 중학교 영어 학습자의 쓰기 능력에 미치는 영향

Abstract

본 연구의 목적은 연어 중심의 어휘 학습이 중학교 3학년 학습자들의 쓰기 능력에 미치는 영향을 알아 봄으로써 어휘 학습에 있어서 연어 지도 및 학습의 중요성을 인식하는 데 있다. 이와 관련하여 본 연구의 연구 문제는 첫째, 연어 중심의 어휘 학습과 어휘 능력 간의 관련성, 둘째, 연어 중심의 어휘 학습과 쓰기 능력 간의 관련성으로 설정하였다. 위의 연구 문제를 검증하기 위하여 경기도 소재의 중학교 3학년 남학생 37명을 대상으로, 사전 연어 능력 평가 및 쓰기 능력 평가를 실시한 후, 7주 동안 연어를 중심으로 한 어휘 지도를 실시하였다. 이후, 학습자의 능력 향상을 측정하기 위하여 사후 연어 능력 평가 및 쓰기 능력 평가를 실시하였다. 연어 능력 평가지의 사전과 사후 평가지 점수를 비교하여 도출한 주요 결과는 다음과 같다. 7주 간의 연어를 중심으로 한 어휘 지도를 실시한 결과, 연어 중심의 어휘 지도로 인하여 학습자들의 연어 능력 점수가 100점 만점에 평균 14.39점 상승하였으며, 이로 보아 연어 중심의 어휘 학습은 학습자들의 어휘력 향상에 긍정적인 영향을 끼침을 알 수 있었다. 또한, 쓰기 능력 평가지의 사전과 사후 평가지 점수를 비교한 결과, 연어 중심의 어휘 지도로 인하여 학습자들의 쓰기 능력 점수가 100점 만점에 평균 10.35점 상승하였으며, 이는 연어 중심의 어휘 학습이 학습자들의 쓰기 능력에도 긍정적인 영향을 끼침을 알 수 있었다. 이상의 결과는 외국어 학습 과정에서 연어를 이용한 어휘 학습의 중요성을 시사하고 있다. 연어를 이용한 어휘 학습은 학습자의 어휘력 및 쓰기 능력 향상에 긍정적인 영향을 미침으로써, 학습자들은 언어에 대한 이해력 및 표현력을 신장시킬 수 있으며, 궁극적으로 유창하고 정확한 의사소통능력을 기를 수 있을 것이다. 이에 교사는 개별 단어 중심의 어휘 지도를 지양하고 학습자의 연어 능력을 확장시켜 학습자들의 의사소통능력을 배양할 수 있도록 해야 할 뿐 아니라, 학생들 스스로가 연어의 의미를 적극적으로 활용하도록 안내할 수 있어야 할 것이다.; The purpose of this study is to find out the significance of collocational knowledge by investigating the effect of collocation-based vocabulary instruction on the writing ability of middle school students. This study raises two essential research questions: First, does collocation-based learning have an effect on vocabulary knowledge? Second, is there any relationship between collocational knowledge and writing ability? In order to address the questions above, a pre-collocational and writing test were administered to a group of middle school students from a middle school in Gyeonggi Province prior to a 7-week-experiment in which the students were taught collocation-based vocabulary instruction. To measure the effects on student performance, the experiment was followed by a post-collocational and writing test. By comparing pre- and post-test scores, the following conclusions were drawn: Collocation-based vocabulary instruction has a positive effect on the improvement of the learners’ vocabulary competence as well as writing competence. On average, learners’ test scores increased by a margin of 14.39 points in the collocation test and 10.35 points in the writing test after being taught a 7-week-collocation-based vocabulary instruction. These findings indicate the importance of collocation in the field of vocabulary learning. Collocation instruction can enhance comprehension and linguistic production, aiding learners in the development of fluent and accurate communicative competence. Thus, teachers should encourage students to use collocation language, instead of giving students lengthy vocabulary lists with Korean equivalents.
