처용무의 소재로 본 한국창작춤 현상연구

Abstract

무용은 인류의 역사와 함께 해 온 유구한 예술 장르이다. 한국무용 역시 한민족의 역사와 사상을 담고 있으며, 21세기에 이르러서도 변화와 발전을 계속해 나가고 있다. 그러나, 전통춤을 계승함으로써 한국무용의 정체성을 공고히 하기 위한 노력과 새로운 시도를 통해 부단한 진화를 이어나가기 위한 노력 사이에서 균형점을 찾아야 한다는 숙제가 동시대의 무용인들에게 부여되어 있다. 즉, 한국무용의 두 가지 큰 기둥인, 전통춤과 창작춤 사이의 상관관계를 명확히 하고, 두 범주 사이의 시너지 효과를 극대화하기 위한 구체적 방법론을 정립함으로써 한국무용 전체의 고른 발전을 기해야 하는 것이다. 본 연구에서는 춤의 ‘소재’를 매개로 하여, 전통춤과 창작춤 사이의 발전적 관계 형성을 도모하고자 한다. 즉, 전통춤을 구성하고 있는 다양한 소재를 심층적, 다각적으로 분석해보고, 그 결과를 현대적 의미로 재해석하여, 창작춤의 모티브 내지는 안무법에 활용하는 것이다. 이를 통해, 전통춤에 대한 깊이있는 이해와 창작춤 소재의 원천 발굴이라는 두 마리 토끼를 잡을 수 있다는 가능성의 제시를 연구의 주된 목적으로 삼았다. 본 연구에서는 한민족의 대표적인 춤인 ‘처용무’를 분석 대상으로 한다. 처용무는 신라 시대 이래로 한민족과 함께 해 온 유구한 역사를 갖고 있을 뿐 아니라, 음양오행사상 등 우리 민족의 사상과 정서를 고스란히 간직하여 예술사적, 민속학적 가치가 매우 높은 작품이다. 특히, 탈, 무복 등 그 소재의 측면에 있어서도 폭넓은 확장성을 보유하고 있어, 창작춤의 소재 개발에 활용할만한 여지가 매우 크다고 할 수 있다. 따라서, 기존의 처용무 연구결과들을 ‘소재’ 의 측면에서 음양오행사상, 춤사위의 방향구조와 상징, 탈과 무복 등 세 분류로 재고찰함으로써 창작춤과의 관계 정립을 도모하였다. 이렇게 분석된 결과를 처용무에서 소재를 차용한 세 편의 창작춤에 적용해보았다. 즉, 문예연감의 한국무용분류기준에 따라, 전통재장착으로서의 ‘축제의 땅, 처용굿’, 컨템포러리 한국창작춤으로서의 ‘아바타 처용’, ‘Oh, my god, 파우스트, 하늘에 닿다’를 소재 측면에서 심층적으로 분석해보고, 전통춤의 소재들이 이 창작춤에 미치고 있는 직, 간접적 영향들을 규명하고자 노력하였다. 본 연구에서는, 전통춤의 소재와 그 소재를 활용한 창작춤에 대해 다각적으로 검토한 결과, 전통을 ‘창조’적으로 ‘계승’해야한다는 다소 모순적 과제를 해결하기 위한 실마리를 제공한다. 또한, 우리의 전통춤은 동시대에도 여전히 유의미한 다양한 소재들의 집합체이며, 이러한 전통춤을 끊임없이 분석하고 해석하여 창작춤의 원천으로 삼아야한다는 당위성을 역설한다. 이를 통해, 창작의 고통을 겪고 있는 안무가들에게는 새로운 안무 방법론을 제시할 수 있으며, 한국무용의 이론적 토대를 쌓아가고 있는 연구자들에게는 한국무용 연구의 방향성을 제시할 수 있을 것으로 기대한다. 즉, 전통춤의 소재 측면에 대한 연구가 활성화되고, 이를 통해 안무가들에게 새로운 영감과 원천이 제공된다면, 전통춤과 창작춤 사이의 관계가 명확해 지고, 시너지 효과가 극대화됨으로써 한국무용 전체의 발전을 이룰 수 있을 것이다.; Dancing is one of the art genres with a long history, which began when human beings first appear on this planet. Korean traditional dancing reflects history and thoughts of the Korean people and is continuously going through change and progress in the 21st century. However, contemporary dancing is facing a challenge: it needs balanced efforts to inherit traditional Korean dancing and thereby strengthen identify of Korean traditional dancing and to continue to evolve by means of experiments. In other words, it is imperative to identify connection between traditional dancing and creative one, which are two main columns of traditional Korean dancing and develop concrete methods to optimize synergy effects between the two categories to ensure balanced development of traditional Korean dancing as a whole. In this study, we aim to explore relationship that promotes development of the two categories, focusing on the ‘subject’ of dancing. Namely, the study is designed to analyze various subjects of traditional Korean dancing from in-depth and diversified perspectives, re-interpret findings from the analysis in the context of modern significance, and apply the results to motif or choreography of creative dancing. Thereby, we seek to suggest possibility to reach two goals: gain an in-depth understanding on traditional Korean dancing and find sources of subjects of creative dancing. The study focuses on ‘Cheoyongmu,’ one of the representative dances of Korea. Cheoyongmu has a long history, danced in Korea since Shilla Dynasty and is highly valuable in terms of art history and folklore, showing thoughts and emotions of the Korean people, including the Yin and Yang Principle. In particular, as it is highly variable in terms of masks and costumes, it can be widely used to develop subjects of creative dancing. Therefore, we review findings from the previous studies on the dance, dividing its ‘subjects’ into three areas: the Yin and Yang Principle, direction structure and symbols of dance movements, and masks and costumes, in order to establish its relationship with creative dancing. The findings from the study were applied to three creative dances which borrowed subjects from Cheoyongmu. In accordance with the traditional Korean dancing classification standard of the Korea Culture and Arts Yearbook, ‘the Land of Festival’ and ‘Cheoyonggut’ as a re-creation of tradition, and ‘Avatar Cheoyong’, ‘Oh, My God,’ ‘Paust,’ and ‘Reach The Sky’ as a contemporary Korean creative dance were analyzed in an in-depth manner, and direct and indirect effects of subjects of traditional Korean dances on those creative dances were examined. The analysis of subjects of traditional Korean dances and those creative dances based on traditional dancing subjects from a wide range of viewpoints provided a clue to resolve seemingly conflicting task of ‘inheriting’ tradition ‘creatively.’ In addition, traditional Korean dances are based on various significant subjects, indicating that it is necessary to continue to analyze and interpret such subjects to provide sources of creative dances. This study is expected to provide a new choreographic method for choreographers who are suffering pain from creation and directions of traditional Korean dancing studies for researchers who are making efforts to lay a theoretical foundation for traditional Korean dancing. Boosted studies on subjects of traditional Korean dancing and thereby inspired choreographers having sources of creation will make a contribution to clarifying the relationship between traditional Korean dancing and creative dancing and maximizing synergy effects, driving the progress of the Korean dancing as a whole.
