Abstract
Bulk metallic glasses (BMGs) which have many desirable and unique properties, such as high strength, good hardness, good wear resistance, and high corrosion resistance are considered as candidates for advanced materials. However, their potential applications as structural materials are generally limited in terms of product size, workability and weldability, etc. In this study, plasma spray coating technique is employed to produce BMG coating maintaining desirable properties with amorphous structure for the engineering applications of BMG materials. As a first step, Cu-based BMG coatings were built-up through atmospheric plasma spraying (APS) process at different hydrogen flow rates. Since the hydrogen flow rate increased, thermal energy in the plasma jet and the melting state of the Cu-based BMG particles increased. Although it was expected that the difference in melting states would quantitatively impact the amorphous fractions in the coatings, both amorphous fraction and oxide content of the layers were independent of hydrogen flow rate. However, different melting states resulting from different hydrogen gas flow rates and the subsequent oxidation which inevitably occurred during spraying, generated different crystallization processes in the coating. In chapter 2, oxidation and crystallization mechanisms in plasma sprayed BMG were studied using their microstructures. Specific analyses of the particles deposited at high travel speed and quenched in cold water also served for further understanding about the melting state and change in composition of the particles undergo during deposition. Coatings prepared with the APS technique contained a considerable crystal fraction due to un-melted particles exposed to temperatures above the crystallization temperature, and oxidation phenomena which led to a reduction in glass forming ability (GFA). In chapter 3, nitrogen shrouded plasma spraying (SPS) was employed as a technique to minimize oxidation and crystallization of bulk metallic glasses. To compare coatings prepared using the SPS technique with atmospheric plasma sprayed BMG, the deposition behaviors, and oxidation- and heat-induced crystallization mechanisms of APS and SPS Cu-based BMGs were studied in light of the results from different characterization techniques. Oxidation and crystallization were controlled using the SPS process as an alternate technique that led to better corrosion resistance properties. The amorphous fraction of SPS coating increased to 91.3% from 72% which is the fraction in APS.
