There has been considerable interest in poly(lactic acid) (PLA) due to sustainability and its desirable properties. However, PLA has been limited to some limited fields due to brittleness and low toughness. Incorporation of montmorillonite (MMT) has proved one of the most effective methods to make up for the weak points. The physical properties of the nanocomposites are strongly dependent upon surface properties of layered silicate such as MMT. In this study, surface treated MMT was obtained by forming covalent bonds between hydroxyl functional group in Cloisite 30B, organophilic MMT and isocyanate group in hexamethylene diisocyanate (30BM). The PLA nanocomposites of various MMT contents (30B, 30BM) were fabricated via melt blend. The chemical structure of the surface treated MMT was evaluated by using FT-IR. The thermal properties of nanocomposites were measured using DSC. WAXD measurement was carried out to confirm the dispersibility of the MMT. The mechanical properties of nanocomposites were measured by UTM and DMA.-
