Abstract
Metastable Ti45Zr38-XNi17+X (where 0≤x≤8) and Ti53Zr27Ni20 quasicrystals prepared by rapid quenching of molten ingots were hydrogenated in a low pressure of hydrogen (less than 1000 Torr) at high temperature. After slow loading of hydrogen between 200 to 300 ℃ the coherence length of the Ti-Zr-Ni quasicrystals was increased from 180 to 260 Å. This result suggests that the Ti53Zr27Ni20 quasicrystal phase may stabilized by hydrogen absorption. Annealing of the same sample at 200 ℃ without hydrogen yielded no change of the relative intensity of the diffraction peaks. Evolution of absorbed hydrogen from the sample was monitored by using a differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) and a thermal desorption spectroscopy (TDS). Combined TDS and X-ray diffraction data demonstrate that the absorbed hydrogen atoms desorb near 500 ℃ which requires further study lowering the binding energy of hydrogen with host metal atoms.
