dc.description.abstractDelivering multimedia across Wide Area Network (WAN) consumes a significant amount of network resources. Proxy servers have been used to reduce network traffic and to improve user waiting time on the Internet by passing data. In this thesis, we study the bandwidth consumption of streamed multimedia from a central video server to multiple clients through proxy servers, and we investigate ways to partially cache multimedia on proxy servers to reduce the network bandwidth requirement over WAN. Some segments of the video are delivered from a proxy server over Local Area Network (LAN), and the rest segments of the video are from a central video server across WAN. We propose popularity-based partial caching, which classifies popularities by taking access rate of each video, to determine how much size of video to be stored at the proxy server. Our results show a significant reduction of the overall transmission cost when clients request popular videos.-
