Abstract

<Geomungo Concerto No.1 for Geomungo Quartet> is a piece arranged as geomungo quartet that maximizes dignified sound of geomungo. This paper compares <Geomungo Concerto No.1 for Geomungo Quartet> and its original version, <Geomungo Concerto No.1>. The comparative findings based on the melodies of the two pieces are as follows:

First, the musical structures of <Geomungo Concerto No.1> and <Geomungo Concerto No.1 for Geomungo Quartet> were divided by beats into part I of four-four time that is ♩=42, part II of three-four time that is ♩=56, part Ⅲ of two-four time that is ♩=92, part Ⅳ (Cadenza) of six-eight time that is ♩.=45~52, ♩.=82~105, and part Ⅴ (last part) of six-eight time that is ♩.=82~105. When counting measures of <Geomungo Concerto No.1> and <Geomungo Concerto No.1 for Geomungo Quartet> by each part, the original <Geomungo Concerto No.1> has 58 more measures in total.

Second, analyzing the solo parts of <Geomungo Concerto No.1> and Geomungo Concerto No.1 for Geomungo Quartet>, the same melody line is found in both <Geomungo Concerto No.1> and <Geomungo Concerto No.1 for Geomungo Quartet> except from 163rd to 196th measures of <Geomungo Concerto No.1> and from 137th to 144th measures of <Geomungo Concerto No.1 for Geomungo Quartet>. Melody from <Geomungo Concerto No.1 for Geomungo Quartet> is not found in measures from 163-191 of <Geomungo Concerto No.1>. A similar pattern is observed between measures 192-196 of <Geomungo Concerto No.1> and measures 137-144 of <Geomungo Concerto No.1 for Geomungo Quartet> with same melody but different rhythm.

Third, a comparative analysis between the orchestration of <Geomungo Concerto No.1> and the geomungo quartet melody of <Geomungo Concerto No.1 for Geomungo Quartet> demonstrates the orchestral melody from <Geomungo Concerto No.1> is either exactly identical or similar to melody lines in geomungo quartet in <Geomungo Concerto No.1 for Geomungo Quartet>. There are 7 identical parts and 8 similar parts in part Ⅱ. There are 4 identical parts and 11 similar parts in part Ⅲ. Every melody is identical in part Ⅳ as it is cadenza. There are 4 similar parts in part Ⅴ.

These findings suggest <Geomungo Concerto No.1 for Geomungo Quartet> is a variation of <Geomungo Concerto No.1>. <Geomungo Concerto No.1 for Geomungo Quartet> is a piece of music with geomungo quartet arrangement that replaces other orchestral melodies and expresses the uniqueness of geomungo sound.; <거문고4중주를 위한 거문고협주곡1번>은 거문고의 중후한 소리를 극대화 시키는 거문고4중주로 편성된 곡이다. 본 논문에서는 <거문고4중주를 위한 거문고협주곡1번>을 원곡인 <거문고협주곡1번>과 비교 분석하였다. 두 곡의 선율을 중심으로 비교 분석한 결과는 다음과 같다.

첫째, <거문고협주곡1번>과 <거문고4중주를 위한 거문고협주곡1번>의 악곡 구조를 살펴보기 위해 박자별로 구분하여 ‘4분의4박자의 ♩=42’를 Ⅰ부분, ‘4분의3박자의 ♩=56’를 Ⅱ부분, ‘4분의2박자의 ♩=92’를 Ⅲ부분, ‘8분의6박자(Cadenza)의 ♩.=45~52, ♩.=82~105’를 Ⅳ부분, ‘8분의6박자(끝부분)의 ♩.=82~105’를 Ⅴ부분으로 나누었다. 부분별로 두 곡의 총 마디수를 비교한 결과 원곡인 <거문고협주곡1번>의 마디수가 <거문고4중주를 위한 거문고협주곡1번>보다 총 58마디 많았다.

둘째, <거문고협주곡1번>과 <거문고4중주를 위한 거문고협주곡1번>의 독주거문고의 선율을 비교한 결과 <거문고협주곡1번>의 163~196마디와 <거문고4중주를 위한 거문고협주곡1번>의 137~144마디를 제외 하고는 동일한 선율로 나타났다. <거문고협주곡1번>의 163~191마디까지는 <거문고4중주를 위한 거문고협주곡1번>에서 나타나는 선율이 없다. <거문고협주곡1번>의 192~196마디까지는 <거문고4중주를 위한 거문고협주곡1번>의 137~144마디에서 유사하게 나타났는데 선율은 같으나 리듬이 다르게 나타났다.

셋째, <거문고협주곡1번>의 관현악과 <거문고4중주를 위한 협주곡1번>의 거문고4중주의 선율을 비교한 결과 <거문고협주곡1번>의 관현악선율이 <거문고4중주를 위한 거문고협주곡1번>의 거문고4중주에서 동일선율과 유사선율로 나타났다. Ⅰ부분에서는 2부분의 동일선율이 나타났고 21부분의 유사선율이 나타났다. Ⅱ부분에서는 7부분의 동일선율이 나타났고 8부분의 유사선율이 나타났다. Ⅲ부분에서는 4부분의 동일선율과 11부분의 유사선율이 나타났다. Ⅳ부분은 카덴자로 모든 부분의 선율이 동일하였다. Ⅴ부분에서는 4부분의 유사선율이 나타났다.

이를 통하여 <거문고4중주를 위한 거문고협주곡1번>은 <거문고협주곡1번>을 바탕으로 한 곡이라는 것을 알 수 있다. <거문고4중주를 위한 거문고협주곡1번>은 관현악에서 연주되는 다른 관현악기들의 선율을 거문고4중주의 편성이 대신하여 연주하여 거문고만의 특성을 표현하고자 하는 곡이다.
