The Catcher in the Rye: Holden Caulfield의 순수성 추구

Abstract

본 논문의 목적은 제롬 데이비드 샐린저(Jerome David Salinger)의 『호밀밭의 파수꾼』(The Catcher in the Rye)의 주인공 Holden Caulfield의 순수성 추구를 탐구하는 데 있다. 이를 위하여 제 2장에서는 Holden의 순수성의 이상적 본질을 생각해보고, 제 3장에서는 그의 순수성의 부정적 한계인 미성숙함에 대하여 알아본다. 또한 제 4장에서는 그가 Phoebe에 대한 사랑에서 시작하여 대부분의 등장인물들을 포용하면서 이루어지는 그의 순수성의 현실적인 변용을 살펴보겠다. 순수한 Holden은 부패한 사회로부터 어린이들이 타락하는 것을 막고 그들의 순수성을 보호하려 하는데 그의 순수성은 청소년의 무지와 미성숙함에 부분적으로 기반을 두고 있다는 점에서 부정적인 한계를 가진다. 그는 가정, 학교와 사회에 대해서 갈등을 겪고, 과거회상과 상상을 통한 현실도피, 음주, 불구화와 죽음에의 갈망과 같은 바람직하지 못한 방법들을 통하여 그 갈등을 극복하려 한다. 그는 점차 이상의 비현실성을 깨닫고 자신이 아무리 노력해도 아이들의 성장을 막을 수 없다는 사실을 받아들이면서 호밀밭의 파수꾼이 되려는 이상과 서부 여행 계획을 포기하지만 Phoebe의 도움으로 좌절을 극복하고 성장한다. 이 소설은 열린 결말로 끝나지만 Holden이 폐결핵에서 회복되어 가정과 학교로 돌아갈 예정이고 일 년 전의 언행을 후회하기 때문에 이 논문에서는 소설의 결말을 행복한 것으로 해석하였다. 추억을 회상하면서 과거를 정리하는 그의 습관으로 미루어보아 그는 글을 쓰면서 과거를 잊고 새로운 삶을 시작하려하고 독자에게 자신의 새 출발을 일러주는 것 같다. 그러나 그는 앞으로 학업에 전념하겠느냐는 정신분석전문의의 질문이 어리석다고 말함으로써 자신의 가치를 완전히 버리고 사회에 순응하지는 않을 것임을 나타낸다.; Through the detailed study of Holden Caulfield's 3-day journey, this thesis aims to explore the process of Holden's pursuit of innocence: the idealistic nature of his innocence, the negative limitation of his innocence resulting from his immaturity, and realistic change of his innocence through the love he feels for Phoebe, and to some extent, for most of the characters he had contact with. Holden is free from the taint of corrupt society surrounding him and tries to protect the innocence of children, shielding them from the pernicious influence of corrupt adult world. Yet his innocence also has negative limitation in that it is based partly on juvenile ignorance and immaturity. Throughout the book, he suffers from various conflicts with home, school and society and he tries to overcome it through undesirable means--escapism, drinking, mutilation and longing for death. However, Holden gradually realizes the unreality of his dream. He comes to accept the fact that children will grow into adulthood no matter how much he tries to prevent it. With this realization comes his decision to give up his dream of becoming the catcher in the rye and to go west instead. But he finally overcomes frustration and grows up with Phoebe's help. Even though the novel concludes with an open ending, in this thesis it is interpreted as a happy ending because Holden begins to recover health and regrets about his sayings and deeds of last year. He seems to leave the past behind and live a new life by writing about past experience and tries to let readers know it. However, it is far from conforming to society and being totally socialized because he regards doctor's question about his future as stupid.
