Abstract
이렇게 계획된 구도심 안의 새로운 공간은 구역 개발로 인한 섬이 아닌, 주변 지역을 진정으로 활성화시킬 수 있는 공간이 될 것이다.| City is the report of the accumulated history and the culture that connects the past, today, and the future. City is the result of accumulated ages throughout the passage of time. Different architecture, different developments, in different times coexists in the city, some spaces are developed naturally, and others by the need. Cities with old historic identities, places where cities started, have trouble harmonizing with the rapid development of today. The difference of the slow development of the past and the fast rapid development of today causes a rupture between the old and the new. The development of the old town that are falling behind, only affects within a limited area, which in result creates other areas to fall behind. Because of this there are invisible borders between the old and the new, and restraints the overall harmonization in the old city. The purpose of this thesis is to present a different solution from the existing urban renewal plan, a renewal solution in the architectural point of view. It is to understand the problems of the old city and to find an architectural solution. The goal is to give a new perspective of the whole through the changed space, to the people who lives and who visits the old town. The subject is a city located in the Incheon, which developed in to a city after the opening of the port. The research was focused on the development of the old town surrounding the old port area. There are many remains of Chinese, Japanese, and European settlement during the opening of the port. Chinese town was formed in the Chinese settlement area, and modern architectures are preserved in the Japanese settlement area. These areas have the deepest history of how Incheon started, and how it was developed yet it is the most undeveloped area in Incheon today. What is the reason? Incheon city are propelling many renewal plans for the area, but I believe this will not solve the problem. Their solution only relies on building newer buildings and wider roads. To find the solutions, we have to look closer at the area and figure out the reason why the area is isolated and undeveloped. Also there is a need to look at the urban structure of the area. Because of the closed outer space of the buildings, the facilities are all arranged inwards. In result, the spaces located in the inner-walkway, behind the roadside buildings, are not active within the block. This is one of the reasons why the city is undeveloped and at the same time a boarder. This thesis will focus in the reasons why the historic area and the commercial area cannot harmonize within the old city. The proposal is to provide a new space to connect the two spaces, a space which is not independent but relies on the existing elements of the surrounding. This proposal suggests an alternative renewal plan which will not isolate the developed area from the old town, but act as a catalyst to revitalize the whole city.; City is the report of the accumulated history and the culture that connects the past, today, and the future.
