Flow mark is a kind of surface defect that can arise during the filling stage of the injection molding process. The purpose of this study is to clarify a mechanism of the flow mark that appears on the surface of injection molded polypropylene (PP) through the observation of the surface structure. The materials used in this experiment were PP/rubber and PP/talc compounding, which were widely used for automobile bumper part. The flow mark had two different surface structures, such as the high gloss part and the low gloss part, alternately on the both surface. It was obvious that the high gloss part shows the smoother surface from the surface analysis of the article. The surface morphology of the high gloss part was quite different from that of the low gloss part. We investigated the surface morphology of PP/rubber and PP/talc composite by using scanning electron microscope (SEM) and optical microscope (OM). Also we characterized the surface of composites with flow mark by using Gloss meter and Alpha-step. From this experiment, we can see that the surface morphology shows the different smoothness along the flow direction and we can also quantitatively measure the flow mark length percent. The mechanism for appearance of a flow mark was clarified through the observation of the cross-section morphology of the injection molded specimens. Also we investigated flow mark length percent and shear viscosity by using gloss meter and capillary rheometer.-
