Abstract
Mercury is very potently toxic pollutant. Mercury ions can be converted to organic form by methylation in nature and concentrated through the food chain. The accumulation of mercury in human body can cause various harmful effects such as brain and neurological damage and myocardial infarction. In this study, we report a novel method for the tracing mercury (II) ion. This involves the use of SERS detection using aptamer-conjugated Aucore/Agshell nanoparticles(Au@AgNPs). This approach provides both simple and selective detection of mercury (II) ions in aqueous solutions. Here, the aptamer molecule in this study is rich in thymine (T) and mercury (II) ions are effectively captured by readily forming THg2+T configuration. When in the presence of mercury (II) ions, a proportion of Cy3 molecules are released from the metal surface causing a decrease in the observed SERS signal. Quantitative analysis of mercury (II) ions was performed by calculating spectral Raman peak area of Cy3 at 1,590cm−1. The proposed aptamer-conjugated nanoparticles showed its applicability for detecting mercury ions in quantitative manner.
