Abstract
Trace metals and organic pollutants such as PCBs, OCPs and PAHs of surface water (in summer and winter) and sediment samples from the Yellow sea were analyzed in order to improve the knowledge and the status for marine pollution. There were seasonal differences of the concentration of most pollutants, especially, the concentration of them in summer were higher than in winter. Among study area, site H4 (latitude 36, longitude 124.5) which is in the middle area of the Yellow sea was the most contaminated. The trace metals pollution status of the surface sediment was assessed using various approaches (e.g., enrichment factor, geo-accumulation index and pollution load index). Concentrations of As, Ni and Cr exceeded the ERL (Sediment quality guideline) in most study area. In the surface sediments, mean probable effects levels quotients for trace metals and organic pollutants were used to assess the environment of the Yellow sea sediments. The result of this study indicate that the Yellow sea was overall clear marine environment for organic pollutants, however, the sedimentary conditions for trace metals were moderately contaminated by some trace metals.
