Filling glass is a material which fills the fractures, fissures, cracks and voids inside the gemstone to improve visual appearance and mechanical strength. Filling glasses currently applied in the gemstone industry are known to contain high level of lead oxide with high refractive indices. Since Pb is harmful for environment and human, the demand for lead free filling materials is increasing same as other industrial material markets. In this study, B2O3-P2O5-ZnO system was selected as a host for lead free filling glass and the 0.1 mol % of Cu2O were added as dopant. The ratio of B2O3 and P2O5, the glass former was one to one and adjusted the amount of ZnO to meet the physical, chemical and thermal integrity requirement for filling glass for ruby. The glass color, structure and properties were studied and the filling glass with 60 mol% of ZnO had closest properties with natural ruby. And the B2O3-P2O5-ZnO lead free filling glass with Cu2O also successfully produced red color similar to that of ruby.-
